Lifetimes of the O{sub 2}{sup +} configuration in {sup 186}Hg and {sup 188}Hg

Description: A new picosecond lifetime measurement system developed at UNISOR was used to determine the lifetime of the well-deformed 0{sub 2}{sup +} levels in {sup 188}Hg and {sup 186}Hg. The half-life values were measured to be 288 {plus_minus} 63 ps in {sup 188}Hg and {le} 52 ps in {sup 186}HG. The corresponding values of p{sup 2}(E0) {times} 10{sup 3} obtained from the E0 partial half-lives are 5.5{sub -2.3}{sup +1.5} and {ge} 32, respectively. Additionally, the half-lives of the 2{sub 2}{sup +} levels … more

Investigating proton emitters at the limits of stability with radioactive beams from the Oak Ridge facility

Description: By using beams from the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at ORNL, it should be possible to identify many new ground-state proton emitters in the mass region from Sn to Pb. In these investigations nuclei produced in fusion-evaporation reactions will be separated from incident ions and dispersed in mass/charge with a recoil mass separator and then implanted into a double-sided Si strip detector for study of proton (and {alpha}-particle) radioactivity. This paper summarizes data presently e… more

Proton Radioactivity Measurements at HRIBF: Ho, Lu, and Tm Isotopes

Description: Two new isotopes, {sup 145}Tm and {sup 140}Ho and three isomers in previously known isotopes, {sup 141m}Ho, {sup 150m}Lu and {sup 151m}Lu have been discovered and studied via their decay by proton emission. These proton emitters were produced at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) by heavy-ion fusion-evaporation reactions, separated in A/Q with a recoil mass spectrometer (RMS), and detected in a double-sided silicon strip detector (DSSD). The decay energy and half-life was measu… more

Behavior of intruder based states in light Bi and Tl isotopes: the study of {sup 187 Bi} {alpha} decay

Description: Intruder state excitation energies in odd-mass nuclei just outside a closed proton shell plotted versus neutron number generally exhibit parabola-shaped curves with minima near neutron mid-shells. The Bi isotopes, however, do not seem to follow this trend. Recent experiments performed at Argonne National Laboratory have identified the previously unobserved {sup 187}Bi ground state (h{sub 9/2}) to {sup 183}TI ground state s{sub 1/2} {alpha} transition. Its energy when combined with those of two … more

Electric monopole transitions: What they can tell us about nuclear structure

Description: A brief survey of E0 strength in a number of nuclei in different regions of the nuclear chart is presented. The connection between E0 strength and shape coexistence is reviewed. Nuclear structure information obtained from measurements of electric monopole transitions in {sup 184}Pt and {sup 187}Au is discussed. Plans for future experiments utilizing radioactive ion beams and E0 internal-pair-formation is presented.

Behavior of Intruder Based States in Light Bi and Tl Isotopes: The Study of 187Bi Alpha Decay

Description: The excitation energies of the single-particle normal and intruder levels in both `83T1 and 187Bi were measured for the first time via the ct decay of 187Bi produced in the 97Mo(92Mo,pn) 187Bi reaction. The previously unobserved 187Bi ground state (kw) to 183T1 ground state (s1/2) a transition was identified establishing the 187Bi intruder state excitation energy to be 112(21) keV, 70 keV less than that of the same level in 189Bi.

Proton Decay Studies of the Light Lu, Tm and Ho Isotopes

Description: A double-sided Si-strip detector system has been installed and commissioned at the focal plane of the Recoil Mass Spectrometer at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility. The system can be used for heavy charged particle emission studies with half-lives as low as a few {micro}sec. In this paper the authors present identification and study of the decay properties of the five new proton emitters: {sup 140}Ho, {sup 141m}Ho, {sup 145}Tm, {sup 150m}Lu and {sup 151m}Lu.

The Structure of Nuclei Far from Stability

Description: From among a number of important nuclear structure results that have emerged from our research program during the past few years, two stand out as being of extra significance. These are: (a) the identification of a diabatic coexisting structure in {sup 187}Au which arises solely from differences in proton occupation of adjacent oscillator shells, and (b) the realization of a method for estimating EO strength in nuclei and the resulting prediction that the de-excitation of superdeformed bands ma… more

Study of {sup 189}Bi{sup m} {alpha} decay

Description: In a series of {sup 48}Ti bombardments of {sup 144}Sm the decay energy of the {sup 189}Bi{sup m} ({pi}s{sub 1/2}) {alpha} transition that proceeds to the {pi}s{sub 1/2} ground state of {sup 185}Tl was measured to be 7.30(4) MeV. This result establishes the excitation energy of {sup 189}Bi{sup m} as 190(40) keV rather than the adopted 92(10)-keV value. Our data thus indicate a leveling off in excitation energy at N {approx} 106 for the s{sub 1/2} intruder state in odd-A Bi isotopes.

The structure of nuclei far from stability. Progress report, May 15, 1992--May 14, 1993

Description: Studies on nuclei near Z=82 contributed to the establishment of a new region of nuclear deformation and a new class of nuclear structure at closed shells. A important aspect of this work is the establishment of the connection between low-lying 0{sup +} states in even{endash}even nuclei and the occurrence of shape coexistence in the odd-mass neighbors (E0 transitions in {sup 185}Pt, shape coexistence in {sup 184}Pt and {sup 187}Au). A new type of picosecond lifetime measurement system capable of… more
