A 10,000 A 1000 VDC solid state dump switch

Description: The superconducting magnet test program at Fermilab requires a switch, called a dump switch, rated 10,000 A, 1000 Vdc, which must be able to continuously carry rated current. A dump resistor rated 2 MJoules, is connected in parallel with the switch contacts and dissipates the stored energy from a magnet when the switch opens. The required switch opening time is 250 {mu}sec maximum after detection of a fault or a trip command. A successful switch can be constructed from six parallel inverter typ… more

Design note of an air-cooled 2 ft x 2 ft x 10. 5 ft long muon spoiler

Description: This note describes the construction of a muon spoiler (magnetized steel assembly) with a cross section of 2 ft by 2 ft and a length of 10.5 ft. Two such spoilers are operated in series at an average field of about 15 kGauss, from one 100 ADC, 40 V power supply. The purpose of the spoilers is to prevent muons from easily escaping beyond the muon laboratory experimental area by bending them down so that they have to pass through more earth. The spoilers reduce the muon dose rate beyond the exper… more

A novel current and voltage regulated energy discharge power supply 200 A, 600 V

Description: The fast spill beam extracted from the 1000 GeV particle accelerator Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory requires two pulsed magnet and power supply systems to steer the beam to the designated experimental area. This beam steering requires a magnetic field integral of 4kGm per magnet for a duration of 4 msec at a rate of one shot per 5 seconds, and limited to 6 shots per 63 seconds. Each shot cannot last any longer than about 100 msec from start to finish. The magnetic field must be constant … more

Electrical and mechanical design report of the muon toroids for the beamline to the muon laboratory

Description: This report describes two large steel toroids used to remove beam halo for experiment 665. One toroid is 88 inch diameter and 30 feet long. The other is 120 inch diameter and 20 feet long. Both have a 7 inch diameter center hole for passage of the beam and the excitation windings. The assembled hybrid coil has water-cooled conductors in the center hole and cables on the outside. This permits the use of one piece steel plates through which the center core is inserted after assembly of the toroid… more

Can Ionic Liquids Be Used As Templating Agents For Controlled Design of Uranium-Containing Nanomaterials?

Description: Nanostructured uranium oxides have been prepared in ionic liquids as templating agents. Using the ionic liquids as reaction media for inorganic nanomaterials takes advantage of the pre-organized structure of the ionic liquids which in turn controls the morphology of the inorganic nanomaterials. Variation of ionic liquid cation structure was investigated to determine the impact on the uranium oxide morphologies. For two ionic liquid cations, increasing the alkyl chain length increases the aspect… more

THE POTENTIAL OF NANOPARTICLE ENHANCED IONIC LIQUIDS (NEILS) AS ADVANCED HEAT TRANSFER FLUIDS

Description: Interest in capturing the energy of the sun is rising as demands for renewable energy sources increase. One area of developing research is the use of concentrating solar power (CSP), where the solar energy is concentrated by using mirrors to direct the sunlight towards a collector filled with a heat transfer fluid (HTF). The HTF transfers the collected energy into pressurized steam, which is used to generate energy. The greater the energy collected by the HTF, the more efficent the electrical e… more

EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF NATURAL CONVECTION HEAT TRANSFER OF IONIC LIQUID IN A RECTANGULAR ENCLOSURE HEATED FROM BELOW

Description: This paper presents an experimental study of natural convection heat transfer for an Ionic Liquid. The experiments were performed for 1-butyl-2, 3-dimethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, ([C{sub 4}mmim][NTf{sub 2}]) at a Raleigh number range of 1.26 x 10{sup 7} to 8.3 x 10{sup 7}. In addition to determining the convective heat transfer coefficients, this study also included experimental determination of thermophysical properties of [C{sub 4}mmim][NTf{sub 2}] such as, density, vis… more

MINOR ACTINIDE SEPARATIONS USING ION EXCHANGERS OR IONIC LIQUIDS

Description: This project seeks to determine if (1) inorganic-based ion exchange materials or (2) electrochemical methods in ionic liquids can be exploited to provide effective Am and Cm separations. Specifically, we seek to understand the fundamental structural and chemical factors responsible for the selectivity of inorganic-based ion-exchange materials for actinide and lanthanide ions. Furthermore, we seek to determine whether ionic liquids can serve as the electrolyte that would enable formation of high… more

Comments about the use of a Zig-Zag transformer to reduce the neutral current created by unbalanced nonlinear loads

Description: The subject of AC line currents with high harmonic content and the potential for overloaded neutral wires caused by the non-linear loading of electronic power supplies has become one of the most popular and at the same time a very complex topic among electrical engineers. Different solutions are offered for this problem. Some examples are specially designed K-rated AC distribution transformers, delta connected primary windings, and L-C tuned filters. All of the above methods have some limitatio… more
