Calibration and performance of the MARK II drift chamber vertex detector

Description: We have calibrated and studied the performance of the MARK II drift chamber vertex detector with cosmic ray tracks collected with the chamber inside the MARK II detector at the SLC. The chamber achieves 30 {mu}m impact parameter resolution and 500 {mu}m track-pair resolution using CO{sub 2}/C{sub 2}H{sub 6}H{sub 6}(92/8) at 2 atmospheres pressure. The chamber has successfully recorded Z{sup 0} decays at the SLC, and resolved tracks in dense hadronic jets with good efficiency and high accuracy. … more

Beam-based alignment technique for the SLC (Stanford Linear Collider) linac

Description: Misalignment of quadrupole magnets and beam position monitors (BPMs) in the linac of the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC) cause the electron and positron beams to be steered off-center in the disk-loaded waveguide accelerator structures. Off-center beams produce wakefields which limit the SLC performance at high beam intensities by causing emittance growth. Here, we present a general method for simultaneously determining quadrupole magnet and BPM offsets using beam trajectory measurements. Results fr… more

Colliding Beam Detectors for the SSC (Superconducting Super Collider)

Description: After a brief discussion of the requirements for the detectors to be used at the SSC, the components of a typical detector are discussed individually, and how they may fit into a full detector is indicated. The requirements indicated include the ability to detect and measure the directions and energies of quarks, gluons, leptons and photons; ability to handle appropriately high energies and high luminosities; and affordability, buildability, and operability. The components discussed include tra… more

Study of intermediate states produced by radiative decays of psi. [Chi 3415, 3500, 3550]

Description: Recent experimental results on narrow states, intermediate between psi and psi', produced by radioactive decays of psi' are discussed. These chi states are examined using the following processes: (1) inclusive photon spectra to search for monoenergetic photon lines, (2) cascade processes, psi' ..-->.. ..gamma../sub 1/chi ..-->.. ..gamma../sub 2/psi ..-->.. e/sup +/e/sup -/ or ..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/, and (3) hadronic decays of chi states, psi' ..-->.. ..gamma..chi ..-->.. hadrons. Clearly id… more

MEASUREMENTS OF THE PROPERTIES OF D MESON DECAYS

Description: We present a study of the decay properties of charmed D mesons produced near the peak of the {psi}" (3770) resonance in e{sup +}e{sup -} annihilation. Branching fractions for nine Cabibbo-favored and three Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes are presented along with upper limits on one additional Cabibbo-favored and four additional Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes. A study of K{pi}{pi} decay mode Dalitz plots reveals a large quasi-two-body pseudoscalar-vector component for the D{sup 0} decays and… more

Inclusive charged hadron and K{sup 0} production in two-photon interactions

Description: The analogous process to quark pair production in e{sup +} e{sup {minus}} annihilation is the hard-scattering quark exchange process in {gamma}{gamma} interactions. This hard-scattering process is expected to dominate the cross section at high transverse momenta of the produced quarks. Experimentally, one has looked for this process in two-jet as well as inclusive particle production and has found a relatively low PT onset of hard scattering in {gamma}{gamma} interactions. This report examines … more

OBSERVATION OF THE {eta}{sub c} (2980) PRODUCED IN THE RADIATIVE DECAY OF THE {psi}' (3684)

Description: In a study of {psi}'(3684) radiative decays with the Mark II detector at SPEAR, we observe the decay sequence {psi}' {yields} {gamma}{eta}{sub c}(2980), with the {eta}{sub c}(2980) decaying into several completely reconstructed hadronic modes. We obtain a mass M = 2980 ± 8 MeV / c{sup 2} and a width {Gamma} < 40 MeV / c{sup 2} (90% confidence level), and present estimates of some of the decay branching ratios.

Report of the Working Group on CP Violation and Rare Decays

Description: It has been pointed out that, with its high energy and luminosity, the SSC may provide the best or only way in which CP violation in heavy meson decays or the rare decay modes of such mesons can be observed. The major problem in the exploitation of the high rates of heavy quark production is the identification of interesting decays in the midst of a large background of more conventional processes. There have been some optimistic reports on the feasibility of such experiments, but relatively lit… more
