Multiphoton ionization of (Xe)/sub n/ and (NO)/sub n/ clusters using a picosecond laser

Description: In an effort to extend the application of multiphoton ionization (MPI) spectroscopy to the study of weakly bound systems, we have begun a systematic investigation of picosecond MPI in van der Waals molecules and clusters. To our knowledge no previous picosecond MPI studies of weakly bound systems have been reported. We present here results of picosecond MPI of Xe/sub n/(n = 1-20) and (NO)/sub n/(n = 1-4) clusters. Previous MPI studies using nanosecond lasers have not detected the NO cluster ser… more

Picosecond multiphoton ionization of atomic and molecular clusters

Description: High peak-power picosecond laser pulses have been used for the first time to effect nonresonant or resonant multiphoton ionization (MPI) of clusters generated in a supersonic nozzle expansion. The resulting ions are subsequently detected and characterized by time-of-flight mass spectroscopy. Specifically, we present results involving MPI of clusters of xenon and nitric oxide. Previous MPI studies of many molecular clusters using nanosecond lasers have not been successful in observing the parent… more

Thermographic properties of eight blue-emitting phosphors

Description: We examined the effect of temperature on the light absorption and emission properties of eight phosphorescent compounds. These phosphors are commercially produced powders that emit mainly in the blue region when illuminated with ultraviolet light in the range 220 to 400 mn. Excitation and emission spectra measured over the range 20 to 350{degrees}C are examined for these phosphors. Data from the emission spectra indicate that there is a significant temperature dependence in this temperature ran… more

Thermographic properties of eight blue-emitting phosphors

Description: We examined the effect of temperature on the light emission and absorption properties of eight phosphorescent compounds. The phosphors are commercially produced powders that emit mainly in the blue region when illuminated with ultraviolet light (220 to 400 nm). Excitation and emission spectra taken over the temperature range of 20 to 350C are presented for these phosphors. Data from the spectra indicate a strong temperature dependence over this temperature range. Maximum relative intensity chan… more

Coordinated safeguards for materials management in a mixed-oxide fuel facility

Description: A coordinated safeguards system is described for safeguarding strategic quantities of special nuclear materials in mixed-oxide recycle fuel fabrication facilities. The safeguards system is compatible with industrial process requirements and combines maximum effectiveness consistent with modest cost and minimal process interference. It is based on unit process accounting using a combination of conventional and state-of-the-art NDA measurement techniques. The effectiveness of the system against s… more

Fiber optic temperature sensor using a Y{sub 2}O{sub 2}S:Eu thermographic phosphor

Description: This report details the development and testing of a thermographic-phosphor-based fiber-optic temperature sensor. The sensor is constructed by removing a region of the fiber jacket and cladding, then coating the exposed core with yttrium oxysulfide doped with a europium activator (Y{sub 2}O{sub 2}S:Eu). When photoexcited, the europium in the host lattice emits a sharp-line fluorescence spectrum that is characteristic of the temperature of the host crystal lattice. By measuring fluorescence life… more

Evaluation of thermographic phosphor technology for aerodynamic model testing

Description: The goal for this project was to perform technology evaluations applicable to the development of higher-precision, higher-temperature aerodynamic model testing at Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) in Tullahmoa, Tennessee. With the advent of new programs for design of aerospace craft that fly at higher speeds and altitudes, requirements for detailed understanding of high-temperature materials become very important. Model testing is a natural and critical part of the development of the… more

Dynamic high-temperature-phosphor thermometry

Description: Dynamic surface phosphor thermometry is being investigated as part of a continuing effort by the Applied Technology Division (ATD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to develop and apply thermographic phosphor technology to an ever expanding thermometry field. The purpose of this program is to develop dynamic surface phosphor thermometry to a stage where funding proposals can be strengthened by establishing a strong information base and demonstrating a sound capability. As a new technology… more

Automated Systems for Safeguarding and Accountancy of Stored Nuclear Material (for proceedings of ESARDA 21st Annual Meeting, Sevilla, Spain May 4-6, 1999

Description: Oak Ridge has developed several sensor systems that are capable of providing unattended monitoring of the physical and/or assigned attributes associated with stored nuclear materials. These systems include the Continuous Automated Vault Inventory System (CAVISTM), SmartShelfTM, and the ReflectoActive Seal System TM. Each of these systems can be implemented independently or may be integrated with existing systems through the Graphical Facility Information Center or GraFICTM software package. Gra… more
