Confinement Requirements for OHMIC-Compressive Ignition of a Spheromak Plasma

Description: The Moving Plasmoid Reactor (MPR) is an attractive alternative magnetic fusion scheme in which Spheromak plasmoids are envisioned to be formed, compressed, burned, and expanded as the plasmoids translate through a series of linear reactor modules. Although auxiliary heating of the plasmoids may be possible, the MPR scenario would be especially interesting if ohmic decay and compression along were sufficient to heat the plasmoids to an ignition temperature. In the present work, we will study the… more

Programming in Fortran M

Description: Fortran M is a small set of extensions to Fortran that supports a modular approach to the construction of sequential and parallel programs. Fortran M programs use channels to plug together processes which may be written in Fortran M or Fortran 77. Processes communicate by sending and receiving messages on channels. Channels and processes can be created dynamically, but programs remain deterministic unless specialized nondeterministic constructs are used. Fortran M programs can execute on a rang… more

A novel particle Time Of Flight (pTOF) diagnostic for measurements of shock- and compression-bang times in D3He and DT implosions at the NIF

Description: The particle-time-of-flight (pTOF) diagnostic, fielded alongside a Wedge Range-Filter (WRF) proton spectrometer, will provide an absolute timing for the shock-burn weighted {rho}R measurements that will validate the modeling of implosion dynamics at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). In the first phase of the project, pTOF has recorded accurate bang times in cryogenic DT, DT-Exploding Pusher and D{sup 3}He implosions using DD or DT neutrons with an accuracy better than {+-}70 ps. In the seco… more

Retrofitting Combined Space and Water Heating Systems: Laboratory Tests

Description: Better insulated and tighter homes can often use a single heating plant for both space and domestic water heating. These systems, called dual integrated appliances (DIA) or combination systems, can operate at high efficiency and eliminate combustion safety issues associated by using a condensing, sealed combustion heating plant. Funds were received to install 400 DIAs in Minnesota low-income homes. The NorthernSTAR DIA laboratory was created to identify proper system components, designs, operat… more

The First Experiments on the National Ignition Facility

Description: A first set of laser-plasma interaction, hohlraum energetics and hydrodynamic experiments have been performed using the first 4 beams of the National Ignition Facility (NIF), in support of indirect drive Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) and High Energy Density Physics (HEDP). In parallel, a robust set of optical and x-ray spectrometers, interferometer, calorimeters and imagers have been activated. The experiments have been undertaken with laser powers and energies of up to 8 TW and 17 kJ in fl… more

Pass or fail: A new test for password legitimacy

Description: While other programs check for bad passwords after the fact, it in important to have good passwords at all times, not just after the latest Crack run. To this end we have modified Larry Wall`s Perl password program and added, among other features, the ability to check a sorted list of all the ``bad passwords`` that Crack will generate, given all the dictionaries that we could get our hands on (107 MB of unique words, so far). The combination of improvements has turned publicly available code in… more

Stability of cracked pipe under inertial stresses. Subtask 1.1 final report

Description: This report presents the results of the pipe fracture experiments, analyses, and material characterization efforts performed within Subtask 1.1 of the IPIRG Program. The objective of Subtask 1.1 was to experimentally verify the analysis methodologies for circumferentially cracked pipe subjected primarily to inertial stresses. Eight cracked-pipe experiments were conducted on 6-inch nominal diameter TP304 and A106B pipe. The experimental procedure was developed using nonlinear time-history finite… more

Demonstration of reduced radiation losses in hohlraums made from cocktail mixtures by measuring increased radiation temperatures

Description: We present results from experiments, numerical simulations, and analytic modeling that demonstrate enhanced radiation confinement of hohlraums made from cocktail materials. We summarize the results from several previous planar sample experiments that showed the potential promise of cocktails. We then discuss a series of more recent hohlraum experiments that attempted to demonstrate enhanced radiation confinement. Once we understood the importance of oxygen contamination in increasing the specif… more

The Second International Piping Integrity Research Group (IPIRG-2) program. Final report, October 1991--April 1996

Description: The IPIRG-2 program was an international group program managed by the US NRC and funded by organizations from 15 nations. The emphasis of the IPIRG-2 program was the development of data to verify fracture analyses for cracked pipes and fittings subjected to dynamic/cyclic load histories typical of seismic events. The scope included: (1) the study of more complex dynamic/cyclic load histories, i.e., multi-frequency, variable amplitude, simulated seismic excitations, than those considered in the … more

Crack Stability in a Representative Piping System Under Combined Inertial and Seismic/Dynamic Displacement-Controlled Stresses

Description: This report presents the results from Subtask 1.3 of the International Piping Integrity Research Group (IPIRG) program. The objective of Subtask 1.3 is to develop data to assess analysis methodologies for characterizing the fracture behavior of circumferentially cracked pipe in a representative piping system under combined inertial and displacement-controlled stresses. A unique experimental facility was designed and constructed. The piping system evaluated is an expansion loop with over 30 mete… more

Performance model of the Argonne Voyager multimedia server

Description: The Argonne Voyager Multimedia Server is being developed in the Futures Lab of the Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory. As a network-based service for recording and playing multimedia streams, it is important that the Voyager system be capable of sustaining certain minimal levels of performance in order for it to be a viable system. In this article, the authors examine the performance characteristics of the server. As they examine the architecture of the sys… more

Design of the IPIRG-2 Simulated Seismic Forcing Function

Description: A series of pipe system experiments was conducted in IPIRG-2 that used a realistic seismic forcing function. Because the seismic forcing function was more complex than the single-frequency increasing-amplitude sinusoidal forcing function used in the IPIRG-1 pipe system experiments, considerable effort went into designing the function. This report documents the design process for the seismic forcing function used in the IPIRG-2 pipe system experiments.
