The EUV emission of cataclysmic variables

Description: Approximately half the luminosity of a typical cataclysmic variable may emerge as an optically thick component peaking in the EUV. Observations of this component are important for understanding the energetics and accretion rates of CV's in general, as well as for understanding the physics of the accretion process. The nature of the turbulent boundary layers and winds of disk accretors and the heating of the white dwarfs by accretion are among the problems which can be addressed by observations … more

EUVE photometry of SS Cygni: Dwarf nova outbursts and oscillations

Description: The authors present EUVE Deep Survey photometry and AAVSO optical measurements of the 1993 August and 1994 June/July outbursts of the dwarf nova SS Cygni. The EUV and optical light curves are used to illustrate the different response of the accretion disk to outbursts which begin at the inner edge and propagate outward, and those which begin at the outer edge and propagate inward. Furthermore, the authors describe the properties of the quasi-coherent 7--9 s sinusoidal oscillations in the EUV fl… more

The quasi-coherent oscillations of SS Cygni

Description: Properties of the quasi-coherent oscillations in the extreme ultraviolet flux of the dwarf nova SS Cygni are described. Rapid periodic oscillations are observed in the optical and soft X-ray flux of high accretion rate cataclysmic variables (CVs; nova-like variables and dwarf novae in outburst). These so-called `dwarf nova oscillations` (DNOS) have high coherence (Q {approx} 10{sup 4}-10{sup 6}), periods of {approx} 10-30 s, and amplitudes of @ 10-30% in soft X-rays and @ 0.5% in the optical. EUV and x-ray emission of nonmagnetic catacysmic variables

Description: Recent results are presented and discussed regarding the EUV and X-ray emission of nonmagnetic cataclysmic variables. Emphasis is given to high accretion rate systems (novalike variables and dwarf novae in outburst), and to a number of apparent discrepancies between observations and the theory of the boundary layer between the accretion disk and the surface of the white dwarf. Discussed are EUV and X-ray light curves, dwarf nova oscillations, and spectra, with new and previously unpublished res… more

X-ray and EUV observations of the boundary layer emission of nonmagnetic cataclysmic variables

Description: EUVE, ROSAT, and ASCA observations of the boundary layer emission of nonmagnetic cataclysmic variables (CVs) are reviewed. EUVE spectra reveal that the effective temperature of the soft component of high-M nonmagnetic CVs is kT {approx}10-20 eV and that its luminosity is {approx} 0.1-0.5 times the accretion disk luminosity. Although the EUV spectra are very complex and belie simple interpretation, the physical conditions of the boundary layer gas are constrained by emission lines of highly ioni… more

ORFEUS and EUVE observations of AM herculis

Description: Far-UV spectra of AM Her in a high optical state were obtained in 1993 September with the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) spectrometer aboard the ORFEUS telescope. The UCB spectrometer has a spectral resolution {lambda}/{Delta}{lambda} 3000 and covers the 390-1170 {Angstrom} bandpass, but interstellar absorption leaves no detectable -flux below the Lyman limit. Spectra of AM Her were acquired during the intervals 04:19:40-04:36:26 UT on September 16 and 08:34:03-09:09:06 UT on Septembe… more
