Investigation of color transparency by high transverse momentum pp elastic scattering inside nuclei

Description: Following a suggestion of Mueller and Brodsky, we have measured (p, 2p) quasielastic scattering in nuclei at 90(degree) CM at momentum transfers of Q/sup 2/ = 4.8, 8.5 and 10.4 (GeV/c)/sup 2/. In a perturbative QCD model of large transverse momentum exclusive reactions, the hadrons which scatter are anomalously ''small,'' and hence have a reduced absorption in nuclear matter over distances comparable to nuclear radii. At sufficiently high momentum, the absorption should vanish completely and le… more

Study of quark flavor-dependence in exclusive reactions at large momentum transfers

Description: The measurement of exclusive reactions at large momentum transfers provides an important testing ground for models of hard quark-quark scattering. We have measured cross sections or set upper limits for 12 meson-bryon (..pi../sup +-/p ..-->.. p..pi../sup +-/, p/rho//sup +-/, ..pi../sup +/..delta../sup +-/, K/sup +/..sigma../sup +-/, ..pi../sup /minus//p ..-->.. ..lambda../sup 0//..sigma../sup 0/K/sup 0/, K/sup +-/p ..-->.. pK/sup +-/) and 2 baryon-baryon (p/sup +-/p ..-->.. pp/sup /plus minus/)… more

Fluctuations in large-angle. pi. /sup + -/p elastic scattering. [2 to 9. 7 GeV/c, differential cross sections]

Description: An experiment was performed to search systematically for fluctuations in ..pi../sup +/p elastic scattering from 2 to 6.3 GeV/c and ..pi../sup -/p from 2 to 9.7 GeV/c. Differential cross sections are plotted. Three references. (JFP)

The BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (A new frontier in nuclear physics)

Description: The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven is in its second year of construction with a target date for completion in late 1997. In this report, I will describe the status of the project, the designated milestones and the capabilities of this collider that set it apart as the premier facility to probe the new frontier of nuclear matter under extreme temperatures and densities. Two large detectors and a pair of smaller detectors, which are in various stages of approval, form the experimen… more

The partial Siberian snake experiment at the Brookhaven AGS

Description: We are building a 4.7 Tesla-meter room temperature solenoid to be installed in a 10-foot long AGS straight section. This experiment will test the idea of using a partial snake to correct all depolarizing imperfection resonances and also test the feasibility of betatron tune jump in correction intrinsic resonances in the presence of a partial snake.

Probing perturbative QCD and nuclei with large angle elastic scattering

Description: The experiment reported here (AGS Exp. 834) seems particularly appropriate for a conference on the intersections of particles and nuclear physics. We have performed a new probe of aspects of perturbative QCD (pQCD) and the time evolution of hadrons inside nuclei. Simultaneously, we determined the momentum dependence of nuclear spectral functions. That is, we measured the momentum distribution of nucleons inside nuclei with a sensitivity to components well beyond the edge of the normal Fermi dis… more

Exclusive reactions and dimensional scaling: New measurements and new understanding

Description: This experiment has measured 11 meson-baryon and 2 baryon-baryon cross sections at 90/sup 0/. When interpreted in terms of underlying hard quark-quark scattering diagrams, the process of quark interchange between the incident hadrons clearly dominates over other graphs such as pure gluon exchange amd quark annihilation/creation. While there is no theoretical prediction for this dominance yet, there is an indication of underlying simplicity. In a continuing program at the Brookhaven AGS we have … more

Stopping power measurements with 17-GeV/c protons at the AGS or inclusive proton spectra from proton-nucleus interactions at 17 GeV/c

Description: The problem of nuclear stopping power and its importance to the study of nucleus-nucleus collisions at very high energies was brought to general attention one year ago at Quark Matter 83 by Busza and Goldhaber. In this context, nuclear stopping power can be thought of as the rate of energy (or rapidity) loss of a proton traversing nuclear matter. It does not directly address the important question of energy deposition. Busza and Goldhaber showed that knowledge of nuclear stopping power is neede… more

Hard quark-quark scattering with exclusive reactions

Description: We have begun a program designed to study hard quark-quark scattering with exclusive reactions, focusing on quasi-elastic two-body reactions with all possible quark flavor exchanges. Examples are ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. ..pi../sup -/p, rho/sup -/p, ..pi../sup +/..delta../sup -/, K/sup +/..sigma../sup -/, or K..lambda... Of the two-body exclusives, only elastic scattering had been measured at such large t previous to our experiment. By comparing the relative importance of different final states, … more

Hard quark-quark scattering with exclusive reactions

Description: We present data from ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. elastic and rho/sup -/p final states for scattering at 90/sup 0/ center of mass, -t = 9 GeV/sup 2//c/sup 2/. A large rho/sup -/p signal is seen and the rho/sup -/ is strongly polarized. This polarization tests a QCD prediction that quarks cannot flip helicity. The test fails dramatically. 9 references, 4 figures.
