Proposed uv-FEL user facility at BNL

Description: The NSLS at Brookhaven National Laboratory is proposing the construction of a UV-FEL operating in the wavelength range from visible to 750{Angstrom}. Nano-Coulomb electron pulses will be generated at a laser photo-cathode RF gun at a repetition rate of 10 KHz. The 6 ps pulses will be accelerated to 250 MeV in a superconducting linac. The FEL output will serve four stations with independent wavelength tuning, using two wigglers and two rotating mirror beam switches. Seed radiation for the FEL am… more

Characteristics of synchrotron radiation and of its sources

Description: Synchrotron light emission and the classical relativistic electromagnetic theory describing it are reviewed. The electron optics of storage rings are considered in some detail, beginning with the ideal electron orbit and the distribution which electrons take around it. This is folded with the process of synchrotron light emission itself to define the effective photon source. The predictions of classical relativistic theory are compared with experiment, and one finds agreement within the experim… more

Resonant impedance of bellows above cutoff

Description: The perturbation method of Chatard-Moulin and Papiernik is used to calculate the longitudinal and transverse impedances, Z(..omega..) and Z/sub perpendicular/(..omega..), of a bellows. The bellows shape is defined by its radius a(z) = a (1 + epsilons(z)), where a is the mean radius, epsilon a small parameter, and s(z) describes the convolution of the bellows. A finite wall conductivity is considered and the resonant contribution to the impedance above the cutoff frequency of the unperturbed cha… more

Polarized wiggler for NSLS x-ray ring design considerations

Description: We examine the properties of an elliptically polarized wiggler that will generate circularly polarized photons with energy spectrum of 3--12 KeV. The vertical wiggler magnetic field is produced by permanent magnets while the horizontal wiggler field is generated by electric coils capable of AC excitation. The radiation parameters of the wiggler are presented, including photon flux, circular and linear polarization and spectrum. These parameters are compared to the synchrotron radiation from a b… more

Reduction of FEL Gain Due to Wiggler Errors

Description: For an FEL operating in the exponential regime before saturation, we consider the effect on the gain of longitudinal velocity variations arising from wiggler field errors. The average gain reduction and the width of the output power distribution are expressed in terms of the mean square average of the ponderomotive phase shift per gain length. A scheme for correcting the electron trajectory using position monitors and dipole correctors is analyzed. Analytic results are compared with numerical s… more

Measurement of the longitudinal parameters of an electron beam in a storage ring

Description: We discuss the determination of the longitudinal parameters of a bunched beam of electrons or positrons circulating in a storage ring. From the analysis of the beam current observed at a fixed azimuthal location, one can learn much about the longitudinal behavior. We present an elementary analysis of the time-dependence of the current. In particular, we discuss the determination of the average current, bunch length, synchrotron oscillation frequency, and the coherent synchrotron oscillation mod… more

Description: The present state of the design of the 2.5 GeV electron storage ring for the National Synchrotron Light Source is described. This ring will serve as a dedicated source of synchrotron radiation in the wavelength range 0.1 A to 30 A. While maintaining the basic high brigtness features of the eariler developed lattice structure, recent work resulted in a more economical magnet system, is simplified chromaticity corrections, and improved distribution of the X-ray beam lines. In addition, the adequa… more

A superconducting short period undulator for a harmonic generation FEL experiment

Description: A three stage superconducting (SC) undulator for a high gain harmonic generation (HGE) FEL experiment in the infrared is under construction at the NSLS in collaboration with Grumman Corporation. A novel undulator technology suitable for short period (6--40mm) undulators will be employed for all three stages, the modulator, the dispersive section and the radiator. The undulator triples the frequency of a 10.4[mu]m CO[sub 2] seed laser. So far a 27 period (one third of the final radiator) prototy… more

Description: There has been recent interest in the utilization of high intensity radiation in the 5-30 eV spectral region. Applications include angle resolved photoemission, photochemistry, and radiation oncology. Here we present the design of a 500 MeV electron storage ring with long insertions for undulators. The ring is designed to provide an emittance of 0.1 mm-mrad, an average current of 1 Amp and an electron beam lifetime of greater than 3 hrs. Studies on the undulator for the free electron laser experiment at the National Synchrotron Light Source

Description: Undulator magnets are used in connection with particle (typically electron) storage rings to enhance the spectrum of synchrotron radiation and are a basic component of free electron lasers. Two configurations are common: helical undulators, for which the magnetic field on the axis is constant in modulus and rotates around the axis as we proceed along it; and transverse undulators, that have a median plane of symmetry. The orientation of the field for a transverse geometry is always the same on … more

Transverse Correlations in Start-Up of a Free Electron Laser From Noise

Description: Linearized Vlasov-Maxwell equations are used to derive a partial differential equation determining the 3-dimensional slowly varying envelope function of the radiated electric field. The equation is solved analytically. From the correlation function <E(z,r,t) E*(z',r',t)> of the electric field averaged over the stochastic ansemble describing the initial shot noise in the beam, we compute the longitudinal and transverse correlation lengths sigma/sub L/ and sigma/sub T/. The radiated power S per u… more

The first wiggler will be used in conjunction with the CO{sub 2} seed laser to generate a ponderomotive force that will bunch the… more

Real Time Closed Orbit Correction System

Description: We describe a global closed orbit feedback experiment, based upon a real time harmonic analysis of both the orbit movement and the correction magnetic fields. The feedback forces the coefficients of a few harmonics near the betatron tune to vanish, and significantly improves the global orbit stability. We present the results of the experiment in the UV ring using 4 detectors and 4 trims, in which maximum observed displacement was reduced by a factor of between 3 and 4. 4 refs., 3 figs.

Betatron oscillations in a free electron laser

Description: A dispersion relation is used to study the effect of betatron oscillations on the gain of a guided mode in a free electron laser operating in the high-gain regime before saturation. We assume the electron beam to be matched to the natural focussing of a helical wiggler, and our treatment includes the effects of the finite energy spread and emittance of the electron beam, the transverse gradient in the wiggler, and the variation of the electromagnetic wave transverse phase experienced by the ele… more
