Linear Accelerator for Radioisotope Production

Description: A 200- to 500-..mu..A source of 70- to 90-MeV protons would be a valuable asset to the nuclear medicine program. A linear accelerator (linac) can achieve this performance, and it can be extended to even higher energies and currents. Variable energy and current options are available. A 70-MeV linac is described, based on recent innovations in linear accelerator technology; it would be 27.3 m long and cost approx. $6 million. By operating the radio-frequency (rf) power system at a level necessary… more

Vacuum properties of sintered SmCo/sub 5/ magnets

Description: There are many desirable applications of powerful, rare-earth permanent magnets made of sintered SmCo/sub 5/ material within vacuum systems. One application is the use of large numbers of SmCo/sub 5/ magnets to provide the undulating magnetic field in a free-electron-laser wiggler structure. Tests were conducted at Los Alamos to determine the suitability of SmCo/sub 5/ magnets in a vacuum environment of approx. 10/sup -6/ torr. The vacuum performances of the wiggler system, with and without the… more

Mechanical design of RFQ resonator cavities in the 400-MHz frequency range

Description: Many RFQ resonator-cavity design concepts have been proposed in the 400-MHz frequency range. Los Alamos has been evaluating RFQ resonator-cavity designs that provide acceptable combinations of necessary mechanical features, easy tunability and long-term stability. Four RFQ resonator test cavities have been fabricated to test rf joints between the RFQ vanes and the resonator cavity. Two of these joints (the C-seal and the rf clamp-joint) allow vane movement for tuning. These test data, and the d… more

Laboratory performance of the BEAR (Beam Experiment Aboard Rocket) RFQ (radio-frequency quadrupole)

Description: The BEAR (Beam Experiment Aboard Rocket) accelerator will be part of an experiment to demonstrate the operation of an ion accelerator in space and to characterize the exoatmospheric propagation of a neutral particle beam. The RFQ (radio-frequency quadrupole) has been designed to produce a 25-mA H/sup /minus// beam with an emittance of 0.01 cm-mrad (rms normalized) at an energy of 1 MeV. Because of the rigors of spaceflight, the accelerator design has been constrained by factors not normally app… more

Accelerator drift-tube braze-joint failures in the PIGMI APF cavity

Description: During the assembly of the Alternating Phase Focusing cavity for the PIGMI Prototype proton accelerator, recurring failures of drift-tube braze joints occurred. In the fabrication technique, a torch braze was used to attach the stems to both the drift-tube body and the stem termination; all materials used were stainless steel. The assemblies were copper plated, using bright-acid-leveling copper plating. Some braze joints, although satisfactorily tension-tested before plating, later failed at a … more

Low-temperature thermodynamic bottoming cycles for fusion reactors

Description: Possible application of thermodynamic bottoming cycles to fusion reactors is examined. Thermodynamic and cost data for many possible working fluids are incomplete. Geothermal research is the primary source of fluid data. Bottoming cycles should be fully integrated into the energy conversion system to achieve maximum effectiveness. Scavenging by a bottoming cycle of low-level energy may be possible but not attractive with present conceptual fusion reactor designs. The best use of a bottoming cyc… more

Development of a 110-m-mA, 75-keV proton injector for high-current, CW linacs

Description: A dc proton injector is being developed for a 6.7 MeV CW RFQ at Los Alamos. The RFQ input beam requirements are 75 keV energy, 110 mA dc proton current, and 0.20 {pi}mm-mrad rms normalized emittance. The injector has now produced a 75-keV, 117-mA dc proton beam (130 mA total current) with the required emittance. The emittance has been measured after a 2.1 m long two-solenoid beam transport system. The measured emittance can be explained in terms of the ion source emittance and beam transport th… more
