Federal Spending for Older Americans

Description: The federal government currently spends more than one-third of its budget on benefits and programs for older Americans. For people age 65 and over, estimated FY2005 spending for Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid alone is $713 billion. Spending for retired federal employees and military personnel and for veterans is also significant, and smaller programs add to the total as well. In addition, tax expenditures might be taken into account to obtain a more complete budget picture.

Prescription Drug Coverage Under Medicaid

Description: Medicaid is a joint federal-state entitlement program that pays for medical services on behalf of certain groups of low-income persons. It is the third largest social program in the federal budget, exceeded only by Social Security and Medicare and is typically the second largest spending item for states. This report discusses prescription drug policies under the program.

Transitional Medical Assistance (TMA) Under Medicaid

Description: Medicaid, a means-tested federal/state program that provides health care coverage to certain groups of individuals, requires that states continue Medicaid benefits for certain low-income families who would otherwise lose coverage because of changes in their income.
