Impact of advanced fluids on costs of district cooling systems

Description: Three alternate fluids, ice-water slurry, friction reduction additive and the combination of them, have been compared for use in District Cooling Systems (DCS). The effect of the fluids on cost and cooling capacities were considered for the two cases of new and existing DCS separately. Two criteria were used in comparisons among fluids in each case: constant pumping power which allows for the most benefit, and constant velocity which is more practical consideration. An economic assessment for a… more

Dynamic Stability Experiments in Sodium-Heated Steam Generators

Description: Seventy-two dynamic stability tests were performed in the sodium-heated boiling-water test facility at Argonne National Laboratory. A full-scale LMFBR steam generator tube was employed as the test section operating over the water parameter ranges of 6.9 to 15.9 MPa pressure and 170 to 800 kg/m/sup 2/.s mass flux. The stability thresholds from the test compared well to the predictions of a modified version of a correlation equation recently published by other investigators. Typical experimental … more

Two-phase flow and pressure drop in flow passages of compact heat exchangers

Description: Two-phase flow experiments were performed with air/water mixtures in a small rectangular channel measuring 9.52 {times} 1.59 mm (aspects ratio equal to 6), for applications to compact heat exchangers. Pressure drop and flow pattern definition data were obtained over a large range of mass qualities (0.0002 to 1), and in the case of flow pattern data, a large range of mass fluxes (50 to 2,000 kg/m{sup 2}s). A flow pattern map, based on visual observations and photographs of the flow patterns, is … more

Dynamic-Stability Experiments in LMFBR Steam-Generator Tubes

Description: A variety of instabilities have been recognized in two-phase flows. Parallel channel two-phase flows are particularly sensitive to static instability and dynamic instability of the density wave type. Sodium-heated steam generators, for Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor (LMFBR) electric power plants, fall into this category, since they are typically comprised of 10/sup 2/ to 10/sup 3/ water tubes. The purpose of this study was to experimentally determine the threshold of dynamic instability in s… more

Blow-Down Tests in a Sodium-Heated Steam Generator Tube

Description: The design of steam generators for liquid metal fast breeder reactor (LMFBR) electric power plants is based on both normal load operation and plant transient conditions. Perhaps the most severe transient to which an LMFBR steam generator may be subjected is known as the water-side isolation and dump transient, often called the blow-down transient. LMFBR steam generators must be designed to accommodate a small but finite number of the blow-down transients. The purpose of this investigation was t… more

A correlation for nucleate flow boiling in small channels

Description: Compact heat exchangers are becoming more attractive for applications in which energy conservation, space saving, and cost are important considerations. Applications exist in the process industries where phase-change heat transfer realizes more compact designs and improved performance compared to single-phase heat transfer. However, there have been only a few studies in the literature reporting on phase-change heat transfer and two-phase flow in compact heat exchangers, and validated design cor… more
