Open loop compensation for the eddy current effect in the APS storage ring vacuum chamber

Description: In the third generation synchrotron light sources, closed orbit stabilization against external vibrations is critical to ensure low emittance and high brightness. The Advanced Photon Source (APS) will use a large number (678) of correction magnets to create local bumps and to achieve global orbit stabilization. In this paper, we will present the result of the effort to counter the effect due to the finite inductance of the magnet and the eddy current in the 1/2 in.-thick aluminum storage ring v… more

Magnetic measurements on the X-17 superconducting wiggler

Description: In this report, magnetic field measurements for the superconducting wiggler magnet to be installed in the straight section of the x-ray ring illuminating beam line X17 are described and experimental results are given. A general multiple expansion for the integrated field is derived using the theory of analytic functions. The theory is applied to the measurement of multipole coefficients. Qualitative features of the wiggler's behaviour, such as quenching characteristics and hysteresis, are also … more

Offset calibration of the beam position monitor using external means

Description: Determination of the offset of the electrical center of the beam position monitor (BPM) relative to the mechanical center is required for the absolute beam position measurement in the injector synchrotron and the storage ring of the APS. Conventionally, RF signal is sent to an antenna or through a wire carefully aligned in the vacuum chamber and the signal is measured at each electrode. A new method using only external means which does not involve mechanical alignment inside the vacuum chamber … more

Experience with Phase II insertion devices in the x-ray ring

Description: The installation of Phase II insertion devices in the NSLS x-ray ring was completed in February 1989, when the hybrid wiggler magnet (HBW) for beam line X21 and the superconducting wiggler (SCW) for beam line X17 were installed. Prior to this time, the soft x-ray undulator (SXU) and X1, another hybrid wiggler at X25, and the ten period mini-undulator at X13 had been installed. 8 refs., 4 figs., 2 tabs.

The attainment of large accelerating gradients using near field synchrotron radiation

Description: Lienard-Wiechert potentials are used to find the electromagnetic field everywhere in free space resulting from a point charge moving on a helical trajectory. The total power emitted as synchrotron radiation from a particle on a circular path is calculated. The point charge results are generalized to the case of a line charge, and formulae are presented which can easily be evaluated numerically. A useful gradient of 80 MeV/m per kA of peak driving beam current over a distance of 1 cm is calculat… more

Abort interlock diagnostic for protection of APS vacuum chamber

Description: The Advanced Photon Source (APS) vacuum system has been designed to be passively safe from bending magnet radiation heating at positron beam currents up to 30 mA. Above this value, certain components may be damaged from vertical beam missteering, although work is proceeding to raise the safe current threshold. Because of this, a system for preventing the misalignment of high power density beams is required. This report details a system for protection from dipole radiation only. Work on a system… more

Description: A script-based interpretive shell GUS (General Purpose Data Acquisition for Unix Shell) has been developed for application to the Advanced Photon Source (APS) control. The primary design objective of GUS is to provide a mechanism for efficient data flow among modularized objects called Data Access Modules (DAMs). GUS consists of four major components: user interface, kernel, built-in command module, and DAMS. It also incorporates the Unix shell to make use of the existing utility programs for f… more

Beam position monitor calibration for the Advanced Photon Source

Description: This paper describes the sensitivity and offset calibration for the beam position monitors (BPMs) using button-type pickups in the injector synchrotron, storage ring, and insertion devices of the Advanced Photon Source (APS). In order to reduce the overall offset and to isolate the error ({approx_lt} 100 {mu}m) due to the low fabrication tolerance in the extruded storage ring vacuum chamber, the electrical offset is minimized by carefully sorting and matching the buttons and cables according to… more

Measurement of beta-function and phase using the response matrix

Description: A new method for extracting the beta-function and phase for the beam position monitors (BPMs) and the corrector magnets from the measured response matrix is presented. The response matrix relates beam motion at the BPM locations to changes in corrector magnet strengths. Using the model beta and phase as the initial values, new values are obtained by iteration. The accuracy of beta and phase thus calculated is limited by the accuracy of response matrix measurement and calibration of BPMs and cor… more

Status of the Short-Pulse X-ray Project at the Advanced Photon Source

Description: The Advanced Photon Source Upgrade (APS-U) Project at Argonne will include generation of short-pulse x-rays based on Zholents deflecting cavity scheme. We have chosen superconducting (SC) cavities in order to have a continuous train of crabbed bunches and flexibility of operating modes. In collaboration with Jefferson Laboratory, we are prototyping and testing a number of single-cell deflecting cavities and associated auxiliary systems with promising initial results. In collaboration with Lawre… more

APS Science 2006.

Description: In my five years as the Director of the Advanced Photon Source (APS), I have been fortunate to see major growth in the scientific impact from the APS. This year I am particularly enthusiastic about prospects for our longer-term future. Every scientific instrument must remain at the cutting edge to flourish. Our plans for the next generation of APS--an APS upgrade--got seriously in gear this year with strong encouragement from our users and sponsors. The most promising avenue that has emerged is… more

Eigenmodes in two simplified chamber structures studied for spurious microwaves in the APS storage ring beam chamber.

Description: The vertical readback errors are one order of magnitude greater than the horizontal ones in the APS storage ring beam chamber. To learn and solve this problem, we simulate the eigenmodes in two chamber structures, which are simplified from the APS storage ring beam chamber, and find their dependence on the variation of the chamber structures. These two structures are introduced as the solutions to separate and then restrain the spurious microwave modes by using a metal short block and a plate i… more

APS storage ring commissioning and early operational experience

Description: The Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) uses a 100-mA, 7-GeV positron storage ring to produce high brilliance bending magnet and insertion device x-rays for up to 70 x-ray beamlines. It is 1104 meters in circumference and has a beam liftime designed to exceed 10 hours with 1 nTorr average ring vacuum at 100 mA. The high brilliance required by the synchrotron light users results from the storage ring`s natural emittance of 8.2 nm-rad, together with the requirement t… more

Global DC closed orbit correction experiment on the NSLS x-ray ring

Description: In this note are described the global DC closed orbit correction experiments conducted on the X-ray ring at National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS). The beam response matrix, defined as beam motion at BPM locations per unit kick by corrector magnets, was measured and then inverted using the technique of singular value decomposition (SVD). The product of the inverted matrix and the difference orbit gives the incremental kick strengths necessary to correct the orbit. As a result, the r.m.s. orbi… more
