Discontinuous Thermal Expansions and Phase Transformations in Crystals at Higher Temperatures

Description: The purpose of this investigation is to make more detailed studies of transformations. Fourteen compounds have been examined by high temperature X-ray diffraction for this purpose. The investigations have been carried out in such a way as to reveal: 1. the existence of transformations, 2. the influence of polarizability on thermal expansion, 3. the anisotropy of expansion, and 4. the discontinuity of thermal expansion.

On Uniform Convergence

Description: In this paper, we will be concerned primarily with series of functions and a particular type of convergence which will be described. The purpose of this paper is to familiarize the reader with the concept of uniform convergence. In the main it is a compilation of material found in various references and revised to conform to standard notation.

Completeness Axioms in an Ordered Field

Description: The purpose of this paper was to prove the equivalence of the following completeness axioms. This purpose was carried out by first defining an ordered field and developing some basic theorems relative to it, then proving that lim [(u+u)*]^n = z (where u is the multiplicative identity, z is the additive identity, and * indicates the multiplicative inverse of an element), and finally proving the equivalence of the five axioms.

Some Properties of Partially Ordered Sets

Description: It may be said of certain pairs of elements of a set that one element precedes the other. If the collection of all such pairs of elements in a given set exhibits certain properties, the set and the collection of pairs is said to constitute a partially ordered set. The purpose of this paper is to explore some of the properties of partially ordered sets.

A Calculation of the Kaon-Neutron Scattering Cross Section

Description: The purpose of this investigation was to study the scattering processes of K+ mesons with neutrons. In order to do such a study one must first make certain basic assumptions about the type of interaction involved and then proceed to calculate physically meaningful qualities which describe the processes. Thus, the problem is this: assuming the validity of Feynman's rules for these strongly interacting particles, calculate the differential and total scattering cross sections for the interaction o… more

Equivalence Classes of Cauchy Sequences of Rational Numbers

Description: The purpose of this thesis is to define equivalence classes of Cauchy sequences of rational numbers and the operations of taking a sum and a product and then to show that this system is an uncountable, ordered, complete field. In so doing, a mathematical system is obtained which is isomorphic to the real number system.
