Ionization chamber for measurements of high-level tritium gas

Description: The construction and calibration of a simple ionization-chamber apparatus for measurement of high level tritium gas is described. The apparatus uses an easily constructed but rugged chamber containing the unknown gas and an inexpensive digital multimeter for measuring the ion current. The equipment after calibration is suitable for measuring 0.01 to 100% tritium gas in hydrogen-helium mixes with an accuracy of a few percent. At both the high and low limits of measurements deviations from the pr… more

Stability of the lanthanide hydrides

Description: A review of the unclassified literature is presented that tabulates the reported equilibrium pressure data of the lanthanide diprotides and dideuterides in the form log P(torr) = A/T + B. Values of the thermodynamic properties are tabulated and the trend in those data is explained by several semiempirical formulas. The isotope shifts are calculated by two independent means. For any lanthanide metal, the heat of formation of the dihydride is about 1.5 kcal/mole more negative than the dideuteride… more

Hydrogen isotopic exchange over palladium metal

Description: We have recently developed the laser-Raman technique as a means of unambiguously measuring the partial pressures of all possible hydrogen isotopes in the gas phase. Using this technique we have investigated the hydrogen-deuterium exchange in a number of metals. This report presents detailed data for isotopic exchange in the palladium hydride system over the temperature range 26{degree}C to -100{degree}C at a pressure of 7 atm. First order kinetic rate constants and activation energies are summa… more

Automated apparatus for Sieverts' studies of metal hydrides. [U deuteride; La/sub 5. 25/ Ni hydride]

Description: An automated system, controlled by a small desktop computer, that carries out Sieverts' experiments on metal hydride systems is described. Data (equilibrium pressures versus temperatures at constant hydrogen-to-metal ratios) are recorded for later analysis and plotting. The computer also controls valve positions during the experiments. Results for two metal hydride systems, the uranium deuteride system in the plateau region and the La/sub 5/ /sub 25/Ni hydride system at low concentrations, are … more

Use of binary alloys of the lanthanides for tritium recovery from CTR blankets

Description: Liquid binary alloys of the lanthanide metals have been proposed as getters of tritium from breeder blankets of controlled thermonuclear reactors. Because of the high stability of the lanthanide hydrides at reactor temperatures (500--1000/sup 0/C), these alloys should prove highly efficient in this application and a series of experiments designed to test this applicability are summarized here. Sieverts' experiments using deuterium were carried out on a series of alloys of La and Ce. For eutecti… more
