Predicting aquatic macrophyte modeling of a new freshwater lake using remote sensing

Description: Par Pond and L Lake are reservoirs on the Savannah River Site in South Carolina. Beds of aquatic macrophytes (primarily cattail and waterlilies) exist in Par Pond and are now beginning to develop in L Lake. Biophysical knowledge about Par Pond was used to develop environmental constraint criteria' to predict the future spatial distribution of aquatic macrophytes in L Lake. The L Lake biophysical data were placed in a 5 {times} 5 m raster geographic information system (GIS) and analyzed using Bo… more

The carbon isotopic composition of atmospheric methane and its sources and trends; distribution of source fluxes and their contribution to the increasing concentration

Description: The goal of isotopic studies of atmospheric methane is the determination of the relative fluxes of the various sources of different isotopic composition. Because of the large number of generic anthropogenic source types it is not possible to determine their relative strengths based on carbon-13 data alone. However, by combining sources of similar isotopic composition (as well as similar origin), and utilizing results from other studies it is possible to calculate some important features of the … more

Composition of phytoplankton communities and their contribution to secondary productivity in Carolina Bays on the Savannah River Plant

Description: The overall goal of the this three year project is to determine the importance of phytoplankton (microscopic algae) as a component of the food chain base in SRS cardine bays. To summarize specific year three results: Total phytoplankton abundance in Flamingo bay was greatest during early spring 1989, declined during spring and summer, but increased again during early fall. Most of this phytoplankton density was composed of genus Chlamydomonas sp. Ellenton bay demonstrated a similar decline in p… more

Simulation of the carbon cycle in the ocean

Description: A dual carbon-nitrogen biological model of the upper ocean has been developed, which has successfully allowed predictions of fluxes of carbon between atmosphere and the deep ocean to made. Regarding studying the carbon cycle in the ocean, the modelling has highlighted the need for a good understanding of the interactions between the carbon and nitrogen cycles, and also the importance of zooplankton grazing and levels of overwintering biological stocks. Problems have been encountered with the ac… more

The limnology of L Lake: Results of the L-Lake monitoring program, 1986--1989

Description: L Lake was constructed in 1985 on the upper regions of Steel Creek, SRS to mitigate the heated effluents from L Reactor. In addition to the NPDES permit specifications (Outfall L-007) for the L-Reactor outfall, DOE-SR executed an agreement with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC), that thermal effluents from L-Reactor will not substantially alter ecosystem components in the approximate lower half of L Lake. This region should be inhabited by Balanced (Indi… more

Radium concentration factors and their use in health and environmental risk assessment

Description: Radium is known to be taken up by aquatic animals, and tends to accumulate in bone, shell and exoskeleton. The most common approach to estimating the uptake of a radionuclide by aquatic animals for use in health and environmental risk assessments is the concentration factor method. The concentration factor method relates the concentration of a contaminant in an organism to the concentration in the surrounding water. Site specific data are not usually available, and generic, default values are o… more
