Status of the lanthanides and actinides in the periodic table

Description: In extended discussions and correspondence with Ekkehard Fluck, the author was made aware of a problem with the Periodic Table, i.e., which element should be shown in the main table as the representative of the lanthanide series and the actinide series. In earlier discussion, he came to the conclusion that lanthanum and actinium are not the elements which should appear, but rather lutetium and lawrencium are more appropriate for inclusion in their place. This paper will attempt to justify the r… more

Irradiation effects on the mechanical properties of composite organic insulators

Description: Four kinds of cloth-filled organic composites (filler: glass or carbon fiber; matrix: epoxy or polymide resin) were irradiated with 2-MeV electrons at room temperature, and were examined with regard to the mechanical properties. Following irradiation, the Young's (tensile) modulus of these composites remains practically unchanged even after irradiation up to 15,000 Mrad. The shear modulus and the ultimate strength, on the other hand, begin to decrease after the absorbed dose reaches about 2000 … more

Elastic-plastic analysis of the toroidal field coil inner leg of the compact ignition tokamak

Description: Elastic-plastic analyses were made for the inner leg of the Compact Ignition Tokamak toroidal field (TF) coil, which is made of copper-Inconel composite material. From the result of the elastic-plastic analysis, the effective Young's moduli of the inner leg were determined by the analytical equations. These Young's moduli are useful for the three-dimensional, elastic, overall TF coil analysis. Comparison among the results of the baseline design (R = 1.324 m), the bucked pressless design, the 1.… more

Physical and mechanical properties of cast 17-4 PH stainless steel

Description: The physical and mechanical properties of an overaged 17-4 PH stainless steel casting have been examined. The tensile and compressive properties of cast 17-4 PH are only influenced to a slight degree by changing test temperature and strain rate. However, both the Charpy impact energy and dynamic fracture toughness exhibit a tough-to-brittle transition with decreasing temperature - this transition being related to a change in fracture mode from ductile, dimple to cleavage-like. Finally, although… more
