Summary of three regional assessment studies of solar electric generation opportunities in the Southwest, Southeast, and Northeast United States

Description: Market opportunities for solar generation of electricity for utility and for residential/commercial/industrial applications in the Northeast, Southeast, and Southwest regions of the United States were evaluated in three studies (JBF 1979, Stone and Webster 1979a, 1979b) and are summarized. The evaluations were based on both economic analyses and user perception of what they would require to select or approve the use of solar electric generation for themselves or for their employers. Over 30 uti… more

Conceptual design of a regional water quality screening model. [RFF; Reach; HANFORD; ARQUAL; SEAS; NASQUAN]

Description: This water quality assessment methodology is intended to predict concentrations at future times and to estimate the impacts on water quality of energy-related activities (including industrial boilers). Estimates of impacts on water quality at future times are based on incremental changes in pollutant inputs to the body water. Important features of the model are: use of measured concentrations to account for existing conditions; consideration of incremental changes in pollutant loads; emphasis o… more

Satellite power system (SPS). Rectenna siting: availability and distribution of nominally eligible sites

Description: Siting of 60 ground receiving stations (rectennas) for the SPS may pose a problem due to the large area per rectenna (15,000 hectares, 38,000 acres) and numerous siting constraints. This study analyzes areas potentially eligible for rectenna sites by mapping, at a national scale, those conditions which would preclude rectenna construction. These exclusion variables which reflect restricted lands, topography, safety, national policy and electromagnetic (microwave) effects, have been computer enc… more

Design change documentation for the National Coal Model. [Mathematical model modifications]

Description: Several modifications are to be made to the National Coal Model (NCM) under contract number DE-AC01-79EI-10578. The model will be expanded to include two additional demand regions (increasing the total number of demand regions to 41) and one additional supply region (increasing the total number of supply regions to 31). Implementing this change in the NCM will be very simple. The relevant tables and lists will be expanded to include the new regions, and the dimensionality of all relevant arrays… more

User's manual for the cloud and scavenging module version 1. 2. [RADM]

Description: This report presents a detailed description of a stable cloud model. This model was designed to characterize a steady-state scavenging environment using meteorological conditions provided by a regional scale meteorology code. The model described in this report explicitly simulates processes related to cloud microphysics. The cloud model predicts the vertical profiles of condensed water that correspond to specified surface precipitation rates, surface temperatures, and cloud top heights. The clo… more

Attached-sunspace designs: a nationwide economic appraisal

Description: Performance estimates for attached-sunspace passive solar heated residences have recently been incorporated into the Los Alamos/UNM EASE III model. These estimates are used to analyze the economic performance of a fixed dimension sunspace design when attached to a pre-existing single family residential unit. The sunspace is a passive design which can be easily and effectively adapted to a retrofit situation. Several key parameters are carefully evaluated for the sunspace retrofit design. These … more

Regional analysis of energy facility siting

Description: This paper has examined some of the regional environmental parameters of energy facility siting, with emphasis on air quality impacts. An example of a siting optimization study was presented, and it was shown how difficult it presently is to specify an environmental objective function that is universally applicable. The importance of regional background effects was discussed, and long-range transport models were used to analyze the relative importance of local and long-range impacts.

Environmental and economic evaluation of energy recovery from agricultural and forestry residues

Description: Four conversion methods and five residues are examined in this report, which describes six model systems: hydrolysis of corn residues, pyrolysis of corn residues, combustion of cotton-ginning residues, pyrolysis of wheat residues, fermentation of molasses, and combustion of pulp and papermill wastes. Estimates of material and energy flows for those systems are given per 10/sup 12/ Btu of recovered energy. Regional effects are incorporated by addressing the regionalized production of the residue… more

Commercial-energy-use model for the ten US Federal regions. [Floor-space-demand forecast to 1995]

Description: Development of a regional forecasting tool for energy demand in the commercial sector of the US is described. Data bases for each of the ten Federal regions are developed as input to the ORNL commercial energy-demand model to evaluate conservation policies, new technologies, and fuel-price strategies on a regional basis from 1970 to 2000. Commercial-floor-space econometric models for each of ten commercial building types in each of the ten Federal regions are estimated to forecast the growth of… more

Regional price targets appropriate for advanced coal extraction. [Forecasting to 1985 and 2000; USA; Regional analysis]

Description: The object of the study is to provide a methodology for predicting coal prices in regional markets for the target time frames 1985 and 2000 that could subsequently be used to guide the development of an advanced coal extraction system. The model constructed for the study is a supply and demand model that focuses on underground mining, since the advanced technology is expected to be developed for these reserves by the target years. The supply side of the model is based on coal reserve data gener… more
