Crystal Field Interaction and Magnetic Order in GdBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/

Description: We report experimental data on the crystal field interaction of Gd ions with their environment in Gd/sub x/Eu/1-x/Ba/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/. The ESR spectrum and a Schotiky anomaly in the specific heat of dilute samples indicate the existence of a crystal field splitting of the /sup 8/S/sub 7/2/ ground state of the Gd/sup 3 +/ ions of about 1.5K. Since the single ion energies involved are of the same order of magnitude as the energies associated with the magnetic ordering of the Gd moments in … more

Fabrication of selenide segmented elements

Description: Processes are described for the fabrication of P- and N-type elements with high-efficiency selenide segments. Bonded hot and cold caps were attached to these elements with techniques based on processes developed in successful TRANSIT and Ring converter programs. An iron barrier was introduced in the segmented P-type element between the (Cu,Ag)/sub 2/Se and (Bi,Sb)/sub 2/Te/sub 3/ layers. This was made necessary by the known degradation in thermoelectric properties of (Bi,Sb)/sub 2/Te/sub 3/ con… more

Correlation of waterside corrosion and cladding microstructure in high-burnup fuel and gadolinia rods

Description: Waterside corrosion of the Zircaloy cladding has been examined in high-burnup fuel rods from several BWRs and PWRs, as well as in 3 wt % gadolinia burnable poison rods obtained from a BWR. The corrosion behavior of the high-burnup rods was then correlated with results from a microstructural characterization of the cladding by optical, scanning-electron, and transmission-electron microscopy (OM, SEM, and TEM). OM and SEM examination of the BWR fuel cladding showed both uniform and nodular oxide … more

Radiation induced amorphization in YBa2Cu3O7 and GdBa2Cu3O7 superconductors

Description: The response of YBa2Cu3O7 and GdBa2Cu3O7 high temperature superconductors to particle irradiation is examined. Both ion and electron irradiations have been shown to first produce an orthorhombic-to-tetragonal transformation at doses roughly a factor of 10 higher. Analysis of the displacement stoichiometry that results from 120, 300, and 1000 keV electron irradiations, 400 and 500 keV O irradiations, and 300 keV helium irradiations indicate that the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal transformation is d… more

/sup 11/B study of spin dynamics in Y/sub 1-x/RE/sub x/Rh/sub 4/B/sub 4/. [RE = Gd, Er]

Description: There has been intense interest in re-entrance and coexistence in ternary rare earth magnetic superconductors of the form RE Rh/sub 4/B/sub 4/. Of particular interest in this investigation is the effect of the superconducting state on the RKKY (Yosida, 1957) coupling between RE ions. Since one expects the conduction electron spin susceptibility chi/sup e/(q) to be cut off for q < 1/xi in the superconducting state, a depression f the RKKY coupling should follow. Such an effect would both depress… more

Preparation and some properties of H/sub x/REBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/ (RE = Er, Nd, Dy, Ho, Gd) superconductors

Description: Hydrogen gas has been found to react directly with the subject oxides. Most exhibit a small region of H solid solubility which remains superconducting with a slight increase in critical temperature (1 to 2K). At higher H contents a hydrogen rich hydride phase precipitates which is amorphous. The H rich phases are not superconducting at 4K or above. Neutron diffraction studies of D/sub 1.55/YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/ confirm that the D rich phase is amorphous but that its precipitation causes i… more

Immobilization of sodium and phosphorus-bearing PW-7a waste in SYNROC. Progress report. [SYNROC C]

Description: The phosphorus, sodium and gadolinium-rich PW-7a waste can be successfully incorporated in SYNROC-C. However, a new accessory phase, a Ca,Na,Ba phosphate isostructural with Ca/sub 5/Na/sub 2/(PO/sub 4/)/sub 4/ apppears in the SYNROC mineralogy. There is no evidence for the partition of key radionuclides (e.g. Sr, REE and hence actinides) into this phosphate. Its poor resistance to groundwater dissolution, whilst hardly desirable, may therefore not have a serious effect on the leaching performan… more

Radioisotope space power generator. Annual report, October 1978-September 1979

Description: The emphasis of the Isotec Technology Program shifted from development of a Galileo generator to study of a segmented selenide element and couple technology. The goal of the FY 79 program was to determine the feasibility of fabricating segmented selenide P and N elements which exploit the high thermoelectric efficiency of (Cu,Ag)/sub 2/Se and Gd/sub 2/Se/sub 3/ materials. A preliminary evaluation of segmented element efficiencies, material compatibilities, and fabrication abilities was used to … more

Improved method for preparing rare earth sesquichalcogenides

Description: An improved method for the preparation of high purity rare earth sesquichalcogenides is described. The rare earth, as one or more pieces of the metal, is sealed under a vacuum with a stoichiometric amount of sulfur or selenium and a small amount of iodine into a quartz reaction vessel. The sealed vessel is then heated to above the vaporization temperature of the chalcogen and below the melting temperature of the rare earth metal and maintained until the product has been formed. The iodine is th… more

Studies of selected transuranium and lanthanide triiodides under pressure using absorption spectrophotometry

Description: The anhydrous triiodides of plutonium, americium, and curium under pressure have been investigated using absorption spectrophotometry. These initial studies on plutonium and curium triiodides together with the published data for americium triiodide show that the rhombohedral (BiI/sub 3/-type structure) form of these compounds can be converted to the same orthorhombic (PuBr/sub 3/-type structure) form by applying pressure at room temperature. Absorption spectrophotometry can often differentiate … more
