Electron heating and confinemet measurements in EBT-S using Thomson scattering

Description: Thomson scattering of ruby laser light was used to measure electron temperatures and densities in the ELMO Bumpy Torus-Scale (EBT-S) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The measurements were made primarily during May 1980, although some were taken during January 1980. The scattering system, which was designed for very low electron density measurements, features a 14-J ruby laser, a high-throughput spectrometer, and 15% quantum efficiency photomultipliers. The measured electron densities lie in th… more

Recent beam probe measurements on EBT, TMX, and RENTOR

Description: It is noted that beam probe systems can provide accurate, reliable measurments of plasma space potential and nf(T/sub e/). Over some temperature range, at least, it should be possible to separate n and T/sub e/ by measuring the multiple ionization reaction products. It is also an ideal diagnostic for studying fluctuations since it provides a simultaneous measurement of phi and nf(T/sub e/) from the same point in the plasma and the measurements are continuous in time. Measurements can be made qu… more

Vacuum system problems of EBT: a steady-state fusion experiment

Description: Many of the vacuum problems faced by EBT will soon be shared by other plasma devices as high-power microwave systems and long pulse lengths become more common. The solutions used on EBT (such as the raised lip with elastomer seal) are not unique; however, experience has shown that microwave-compatible designs must be carefully thought out. All details of the vacuum must be carefully thought out. All details of the vacuum must be carefully screened in advance to insure that microwaves do not lea… more

EBT-P gamma-ray shielding system

Description: An elaborate study was carried out for the coil and biological shield of the ELMO Bumpy Torus proof-of-principle (EBT-P) device. A three-dimensional scoping study for the coil shield was performed for four different shielding options to define the heat load for each component and check the compliance with the design criterion of 10 watts maximum heat per coil from the gamma ray sources. Also, a detailed biological dose survey was performed which included: (a) the dose equivalent inside and outs… more

Introduction to magnetic confinement fusion diagnostics

Description: These notes present a brief survey of some of the current diagnostic techniques used in magnetic fusion plasma devices. To give an idea of the range of parameters and geometries encountered the parameters of four representative experiments - PLT, TMX, ZT-40 and EBT-I(S) - are given. The central issue of all experiments is to understand the flow of power which can be summarized by two volume integrated equations for the ions and electrons.

Error field generation of solenoid magnets

Description: Many applications for large solenoids and solenoidal arrays depend on the high precision of the axial field profile. In cases where requirements of ..delta..B/B for nonaxial fields are on the order of 10/sup -4/, the actual winding techniques of the solenoid need to be considered. Whereas an ideal solenoid consisting of current loops would generate no radial fields along the axis, in reality, the actual current-carrying conductors must follow spiral or helical paths. A straightforward method fo… more

Fast-wave ICRF heating for EBT-P

Description: Supplementary ion heating will play a major role in advancing the physics understanding of bumpy tori in EBT-P. Fast-wave ICRF heating is the method selected for EBT-P because of the successful ICRF heating experiments on tokamaks and on EBT-S. Given neoclassical electron behavior, then 2 MW of ICRF heating in the range of 60 to 90 MHz should be sufficient for the achievement of all the goals for ion heating, including 5% core plasma beta at the rings.

One-dimensional gamma-ray shielding calculations for the EBT-P

Description: Due to the expected large loss of electrons on the magnetic coil assemblies and other components of the proposed EBT-P plasma device, the induced gamma-ray field from bremsstrahlung will be very intense. These gamma rays will yield increased heating loads on the superconducting cryogenic coils as well as produce a significant biological hazard. In this summary, the results from a series of one-dimensional calculations in which the gamma-ray heating loads were determined are presented for severa… more

Diagnostic protection techniques in steady state, high power RF and microwave

Description: The use of high power RF and microwave heating in the range of 10's of MHz through 10's of GHz in the next generation devices will require that diagnostics be hardened and isolated from the plasma and heating environment. Diagnostics used on the ELMO Bumpy Torus (EBT) have been faced with such a hostile environment, in steady state, and solutions have evolved to make diagnostic measurements possible.

Hydrogen recycle modeling and measurements in tokamaks and EBT

Description: A model for hydrogen recycling developed for use in a Tokamak transport code is described and compared with measurements on ISXB and DITE. The model includes kinetic reflection of charge-exchange neutrals from the wall and deposition, thermal diffusion and desorption processes in the wall. In a Tokamak with a limiter, the inferred recycle coefficient of 0.9 to 1.0 is due primarily to reflection (0.8 to 0.9) with the remainder (0.1 to 0.2) being due to desorption. Laboratory experiments supply m… more

Ion Cyclotron Heating Experiments in EBT-S

Description: Fast-wave heating and propagation experiments in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) have been carried out on EBT-S under steady-state conditions at power levels up to 20 kW and under pulsed conditions at power levels up to 100 kW. The waves were launched using a single Faraday-shielded loop antenna installed on the midplane of one of the 24 cavity sectors. Substantial ion heating was observed at frequencies above the second harmonic for hydrogen plasmas and at frequencies above the t… more

One-dimensional gamma-ray shielding analysis for EBT-P

Description: A one-dimensional scoping study was performed for the gamma ray shield of the ELMO Bumpy Torus proof-of-principle (EBT-P) device. The objective was to define appropriate shielding material and determine the required shielding thickness for EBT-P. The dose equivalent results as a function of the radiation shield thickness for different shielding options are presented. A sensitivity analysis for the pessimistic case is given. The recommended shielding option based on the performance and cost is d… more

Reactor Assessments of Advanced Bumpy Torus Configurations

Description: Recently, several configurational approaches and concept improvement schemes were introduced for enhancing the performance of the basic ELMO Bumpy Torus (EBT) concept and for improving its reactor potential. These configurations include planar racetrack and square geometries, Andreoletti coil systems, and bumpy torus-stellarator hybrids (which include twisted racetrack and helical axis stellarator-snakey torus). Preliminary evaluations of reactor implications of each of these configurations hav… more

Electron transport in EBT in the low collision frequency limit

Description: A variational principle formulation is used to calculate the electron neoclassical transport coefficients in a bumpy torus for the low collisionality regime. The electron radial drift is calculated as a function of the plasma position and the poloidal electric field which is determined self-consistently. A bounce-averaged differential collision operator is used and the results are compared to previous treatments using a BGK operator.

EBT reactor analysis

Description: This report summarizes the results of a recent ELMO Bumpy Torus (EBT) reactor study that includes ring and core plasma properties with consistent treatment of coupled ring-core stability criteria and power balance requirements. The principal finding is that constraints imposed by these coupling and other physics and technology considerations permit a broad operating window for reactor design optimization. Within this operating window, physics and engineering systems analysis and cost sensitivit… more
