Neutron Activation in EBT-P

Description: Neutron activation due to photoneutron production in the lead shields proposed to protect the EBT-P superconducting coils from excessive x-ray heating was investigated. The photoneutron flux distribution in various EBT-P structural components was calculated for typical upgrade operating conditions using a standard two-dimensional transport model (TWOTRAN). Activity levels were then evaluated for major structural materials using activation cross sections tabulated in the GAMMON library. Activati… more

EBT-P gamma-ray-shielding analysis

Description: First, a one-dimensional scoping study was performed for the gamma-ray shield of the ELMO Bumpy Torus proof-of-principle device to define appropriate shielding material and determine the required shielding thickness. The dose-equivalent results are analyzed as a function of the radiation-shield thickness for different shielding options. A sensitivity analysis for the pessimistic case is given. The recommended shielding option based on the performance and cost is discussed. Next, a three-dimensi… more

Microwave Transport in EBT Distribution Manifolds Using Monte Carlo Ray-Tracing Techniques

Description: Ray tracing Monte Carlo calculations have been carried out using an existing Monte Carlo radiation transport code to obtain estimates of the microsave power exiting the torus coupling links in EPT microwave manifolds. The microwave power loss and polarization at surface reflections were accounted for by treating the microwaves as plane waves reflecting off plane surfaces. Agreement on the order of 10% was obtained between the measured and calculated output power distribution for an existing EBT… more

Radial mode structure of curvature-driven instabilities in EBT

Description: Viewgraphs describe the theoretical treatment of the radial mode structure of plasma instabilities in the Elmo Bumpy Torus. The calculation retains nonlocal structure of the modes, connects inner and outer ring regions together, uses a self-consistent finite ..beta.., includes the relativistic effects for the hot electron ring, and examines a wide range of parameters. Comparison of calculational methods for EBT reactor nucleonics

Description: Nucleonic calculations for a preliminary conceptual design of the first wall/blanket/shield/coil assembly for an EBT reactor are described. Two-dimensional Monte Carlo, and one- and two-dimensional discrete-ordinates calculations are compared. Good agreement for the calculated values of tritium breeding and nuclear heating is seen. We find that the three methods are all useful and complementary as a design of this type evolves.

ELMO Bumpy Torus data base

Description: This document describes a set of computer programs developed to facilitate storage and retrieval of data generated by the ELMO Bumpy Torus (EBT) experiment. The data is stored in a collection of files which contain either raw or analyzed data from diagnostics connected to the experiment. An on-line index of steady-state machine conditions, diagnostic or analysis status information, and raw or analyzed data values unifies the file collection into a data base. The index is implemented under the S… more

Data format translation routines

Description: To enable the effective connection of several dissimilar computers into a network, modification of the data being passed from one computer to another may become necessary. This document describes a package of routines which permit the translation of data in PDP-8 formats to PDP-11 or DECsystem-10 formats or from PDP-11 format to DECsystem-10 format. Additional routines are described which permit the effective use of the translation routines in the environment of the Fusion Energy Division (FED)… more

Curvature-driven instabilities in the Elmo Bumpy Torus (EBT)

Description: Curvature-driven instabilities are analyzed for an EBT configuration which consists of plasma interacting with a hot electron ring whose drift frequencies are larger than the growth rates predicted from conventional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) theory. Stability criteria are obtained for five possible modes: the conventional hot electron interchange, a high-frequency hot electron interchange (at frequencies greater than the ion-cyclotron frequency), a compressional instability, a background plasma… more

Wave heating models for ion-cyclotron heating in EBT-S

Description: Wave heating of ELMO BUMPY TORUS-SCALE (EBT-S) in the ion-cyclotron range of frequencies will be strongly influenced by the geometry of the plasma. In particular, the short finite length of the mirror sections means that the electron bounce frequency is of comparable magnitude to the ion-cyclotron frequency. Consequently, the bouncing motion of trapped particles impacts the electron absorption of wave energy. Furthermore, the varying magnetic field strength along magnetic field lines influences… more

Coupled transport and heating in EBT and EBS

Description: In ELMO Bumpy Torus (EBT) and EBT-like devices, hot electron rings form at the edge of the warm core plasma. As early as 1975 it was recognized that microwave heating, which plays such a significant role in electron dynamics, should be incorporated into transport models. Recent theoretical microwave heating and transport studies suggest that this is critical for explaining EBT experiments. In particular, descriptions of the electron distribution as a sum of only two distributions (i.e., one for… more

Description: Pulsed and CW gyrotron oscillators have been designed and constructed for use in electron cyclotron resonance heating in plasma fusion experiments. The tubes are designed for 200 kW output at 28 GHz with beam input of 80 kV and 8 A. The pulsed design has been operated at duty factors of 5% and pulse lengths up to 40 msec. The CW design has produced output of 200 kW CW with an efficiency of 50%. It also operated with 52% efficiency at an output level of 170 kW CW. The tubes are designed for powe… more

EBT: an alternate concept to tokamaks and mirrors

Description: The ELMO Bumpy Torus (EBT) is a hybrid magnetic trap formed by a series of toroidally connected simple mirrors. It differs from a tokamak, the present main-line approach, in that plasma stability and heating are obtained in a current-free geometry by the application of steady-state, high power, electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECH) producing a steady-state plasma. The primary motivation for EBT confinement research is the potential for a steady-state, highly accessible reactor with high ..… more

Boundary layer studies related to fusion theory. Final report

Description: The described work studied the boundary between closed and open field lines in EBT geometry, with emphasis on the microstability properties. These properties were established primarily for drift waves in the lower hybrid range of frequencies. The transport due to these modes was evaluated by a self-consistent treatment, using quasilinear models in a plasma diffusion code. The model was benchmarked against the EDT experimental results from ORNL and the sensitivity to transport model established.… more

One-dimensional gamma ray and photoneutron shielding calculations for the EBT-P

Description: One-dimensional radiation transport calculations have been performed to obtain estimates of the nuclear heat loads and biological dose rates due to bremsstrahlung gamma rays and photoneutrons in the EBT-P. The bremsstrahlung gamma rays arise because of electron impingement upon the magnetic coil assemblies and these gamma rays in turn produce photoneutrons through interactions in the high Z shielding materials. For a 1 MW electron power loss, /sup 238/U and tungsten coil shield thicknesses of a… more

Surface probe measurements in ISX-B and EBT-S

Description: Surface deposition probe techniques have been shown to be an effective means of determining the characteristics of the plasma edge region of magnetic confinement devices. Experimental results on ISX-B and EBT-S have led to a consistent picture of the edge plasma and the dominant impurity introduction mechanisms. This picture is supported by numerous other measurements and emphasizes the importance of concentrating several techniques on the complex problems of plasma fusion.

Description: The power balance of the bulk electrons and ions in discharges with 37 kW of applied microwave power in the ELMO Bumpy Torus (EBT) is examined in a zero-dimensional model using data on the intensity and linewidth of the molecular and atomic hydrogen emission. At least 60% of the applied power is ultimately dissipated by processes involving the neutral particles, including dissociation of molecules, ionization of and radiation from atoms, and heating of cold electrons produced during atomic ioni… more
