Strange particle production in neutrino-neon charged current interactions

Description: Neutral strange particle production in charged-current muon-neutrino interactions have been studied in the Fermilab 15-foot neon bubble chamber. Associated production is expected to be the major source of strange particles in charged-current neutrino interactions. sigma-neutral and xi-minus production by neutrinos was observed. The dependence on various leptonic and hadronic variables is investigated. A fit to single and associated production of s, s/anti-s, and c quarks is described based on t… more

Proton microprobe analysis of zinc in skeletal tissues. [Proton induced x-ray emission analysis]

Description: A proton microprobe with windowless exit port was used to study zinc distributions in various types of skeletal tissues. The use of an external beam facilitated positioning of the targets for examination of particular points of interest. The proton microprobe is uniquely suited to this work since it combines high sensitivity for zinc determinations in thick samples with good spatial resolution. Measurements on rat and rabbit Achilles tendon showed a significant increase in zinc concentrations a… more

Preliminary results on nu/sub. mu. / + e/sup -/. -->. nu/sub. mu. / + e/sup -/

Description: We present here preliminary results on a recent experiment on nu/sub ..mu../ - e/sup -/ elastic scattering. A brief review of the Glashow-Salam-Weinberg theory is given, indicating how the measurement of the total cross section gives rise to an ambiguous solution for sin/sup 2/ THETA/sub w/, and showing how the differential cross section can be used to resolve the ambiguity. The experimental configuration and the extraction of the signal are described. The data are compared with those from our … more

Limits on likesign dilepton production in nu/sub. mu. / interactions

Description: We have searched for the production of likesign dilepton events (nu/sub ..mu../ + Ne ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/ + e/sup -/ + ...) in a wideband neutrino beam at FNAL using the 15' bubble chamber. We observe no signal above the background arising from conventional sources. We set 90% confidence level upper limits for the production rates of (nu/sub ..mu../ + Ne ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/ + e/sup -/ + ...)/(nu/sub ..mu../ + Ne ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/ + ...) less than or equal to 8 * 10/sup -5/ and (nu/sub ..… more

Membrane-controlled processes for the energy-efficient conversion of sludges to fuels and marketable chemicals

Description: Studies were carried out on the concentration of primary and secondary sludges by ultrafiltration, and the operation of a membrane-assisted anaerobic digester to treat these sludges. Auxiliary devices including water-spilling and membrane solvent extraction were tested for their feasibility in the ehhancement of digester operations and the recovery of valuable byproducts. It was shown that membrane-facilitated digestion can increase the rate of these processes by a factor of ten, together with … more

Study of direct single photons and correlated particles in proton-proton collisions at. sqrt. s = 62. 4 GeV

Description: As part of a study of large p/sub T/ phenomena in proton-proton collisions at the CERN ISR, a search for direct single photon production has been performed. A statistical division of the data sample into the fraction consistent with single photon production and the fraction due to multiphoton decays of neutral hadrons is accomplished by measuring the average conversion probability for the sample in a one radiation length thick converter. The fraction of the sample attributable to direct single … more

Measurement of Same-Sign Dimuon Production in High-Energy Neutrino Interactions

Description: We present rates for same-sign dimuon production in neutrino-iron interactions with energies of 30 to 600 GeV. We find 101 neutrino and 15 anti-neutrino induced same-sign dimuons with muon momenta above 9 GeV/c. A detailed calculation indicates that the overall level and kinematic distributions of conventional backgrounds are consistent with the data. There is no convincing indication of new physical processes. 16 refs., 11 figs., 1 tab.

Estimation of Structural Reliability Under Combined Loads. [PWR; BWR]

Description: For the overall safety evaluation of seismic category I structures subjected to various load combinations, a quantitative measure of the structural reliability in terms of a limit state probability can be conveniently used. For this purpose, the reliability analysis method for dynamic loads, which has recently been developed by the authors, was combined with the existing standard reliability analysis procedure for static and quasi-static loads. The significant parameters that enter into the ana… more

Development of a Reliability-Analysis Method for Category I Structures. [PWR; BWR]

Description: The present paper develops a reliability analysis method for category I nuclear structures, particularly for reinforced concrete containment structures subjected to various load combinations. The loads considered here include dead loads, accidental internal pressure and earthquake ground acceleration. For mathematical tractability, an earthquake occurrence is assumed to be governed by the Poisson arrival law, while its acceleration history is idealized as a Gaussian vector process of finite dur… more

Search for Inclusive Oscillations of Muon Neutrinos in the Mass Range, 20 <. Delta. M/sup 2/ < 900 Ev/sup 2/

Description: A sensitive search for inclusive neutrino oscillations has been performed using two similar detectors running simultaneously at different locations in the Fermilab dichromatic muon-neutrino beam. The preliminary results show no significant oscillation signal and rule out inclusive oscillations of muon neutrinos into any other type of neutrons for 20 < ..delta..m/sup 2/ < 900 eV/sup 2/ and sin/sup 2/(2 theta) > 0.03 to 0.10.

FEM-Based Random-Vibration Analysis of Nuclear Structures Under Seismic Loading. [PWR; BWR]

Description: This paper outlines an analytical and numerical procedure developed for the frequency domain finite element analysis of category I nuclear structures, in particular, of reinforced concrete containment shell structures, subjected to earthquake ground acceleration. Such a procedure can be conveniently used in the analytical evaluation of the overall seismic safety of nuclear power plant structures. Emphasized in this presentation, however, is the analytical procedure associated with the random vi… more

Reliability assessment of Indian Point Unit 3 containment structure under combined loads

Description: In the current design criteria, the load combinations specified for design of concrete containment structures are in the deterministic format. However, by applying the probability-based reliability analysis method developed by BNL to the concrete containment structures designed according to the criteria, it is possible to evaluate the reliability levels implied in the current design criteria. For this purpose, the reliability analysis is applied to the Indian Point Unit No. 3 containment. The d… more

Search for new heavy techniparticles

Description: In this article, we consider in some detail an experiment to search for the Technieta (eta/sub T/), which is expected to be in the 100 to 300 GeV mass range. For the sake of concreteness we use the predictions of the technicolor models; however, it might be better to think of these considerations as an example of the kind of searches that should be carried out with the next generation of hadron-hadron colliders, without putting too much importance on the details of the theoretical models that h… more
