Possibilities and problems in uv radiation carcinogenesis experiments

Description: Experiments were designed to solve problems in dose-response relationships in uv-induced carcinogenesis. Two strains of hairless mice were exposed to 300 to 400 nm, 320 to 400 nm, and 365 nm wavelength emissions following exposure to 8-methoxy-psoralen; various fractionation regimes were used. Results showed that the number of psoralen-DNA crosslinks per cell increased linearly with dose. The importance of wavelength in the initiation and the expression of tumors is emphasized. (HLW)

Wavelengths and Oscillator Strengths of Transitions in Kr XXXIII and Kr XXXIV. [Preliminary Results]

Description: The beam foil technique was used to measure the wavelengths and meanlines of the upper levels of: the 2s /sup 2/S/sub 1/2/-2p /sup 2/P/sup 0//sub 1/2,3/2/ resonance transitions in lithium-like Kr XXXIV and the 2s/sup 2/ /sup 1/S/sub 0/-2s2p /sup 3/P/sup 0//sub 1/ intersystem transition in berylium-like Kr XXXIII. Preliminary analysis of the data indicates good agreement between experimental values and results of recent relativistic oscillator strength calculations. 12 references.

Lamb shift and fine structure of n=2 in /sup 35/Cl XVI. [Wavelengths]

Description: Measured wavelengths of the 2s /sup 3/S/sub 1/--2p /sup 3/P/sub 2/ and 2s /sup 3/S/sub 1/--2p /sup 3/P/sub 0/ transitions in Cl XVI to be 613.825 +- 0.012 A and 705.975 +- 0.064 A. The precision is sufficient to provide measurements of the 2s/sub 1/2/--2p/sub 1/2/ and 2s/sub 1/2/--2p/sub 3/2/ Lamb shifts to an accuracy of +-0.3% and to test Q.E.D. theory in the strong field region. 10 references.

Dependence of laser-driven compression efficiency on wavelength

Description: Numerical simulations of laser-driven implosions combined with previously derived scaling laws, both based on classical thermal conduction without any flux limiting, indicate that the absorbed energy required to cause a given implosion, and, therefore, the anticipated nuclear yield ratio should scale approximately inversely with wavelength in the visible and near infrared.

THE 3d2 - 3d4f TRANSITIONS IN V IV

Description: The 3d4f levels in the spectrum of triply ionized vanadium, V IV, were located by L. Iglesias. She located these levels by identifying transitions from the 3d{sup 2} ground configuration to the 3d4p levels, then to the 3d4d levels and finally to the 3d4f levels. She also identified the transitions from the 3d4d levels to the 3d5p levels, continued up to the 3d5d levels, then back down to the 3d4f levels. Though the 3d4f levels were well established by two routes, the direct transitions from the… more

OPTICAL DIFFERENCE FREQUENCY GENERATION OF FAR INFRARED RADIATION

Description: Three investigations of difference frequency generation (DFG) of far-infrared radiation by optical mixing are described: a theory of DFG by monochromatic, focused Gaussian pump laser beams, a theory of DFG by a picosecond pump laser pulse, and an experiment using ruby-pumped dye lasers. First, the theory of far-infrared generation by optical mixing of monochromatic, focused Gaussian beams in a uniaxial crystal is developed, taking into account the effects of diffraction, absorption, double refr… more

Atomic spectrum of neptunium. [Tables]

Description: A description and interpretation of the atomic spectrum of neptunium are given. Wavelengths were measured for 6096 spectrum lines in the range 3793 to 38,812 cm/sup -1/ (26,353 to 2575 A), of which 2526 were classified as transitions between 329 odd levels and 130 even levels of neutral neptunium (Np I). The data are presented in five tables.

Metabolic and physical scaling in microwave/radiofrequency bioeffects studies

Description: Research on the biological effects of microwaves is primarily related to the problem of hazard assessment for exposure of man. To reach an objective, scientifically valid solution to the hazard assessment problem, two complex, integrative tasks must be systematically accomplished. One of these is the determination of the absorbed energy required to cause deleterious changes in body functions of experimental animals; this requires a quantitative evaluation and comparison of the many experiments … more
