Monte-Carlo approach to the generation of adversary paths

Description: This paper considers the definition of a threat as the sequence of events that might lead to adversary success. A nuclear facility is characterized as a weighted, labeled, directed graph, with critical adversary paths. A discrete-event, Monte-Carlo simulation model is used to estimate the probability of the critical paths. The model was tested for hypothetical facilities, with promising results. (DLC)

Review of issues relevant to acceptable risk criteria for nuclear waste management

Description: Development of acceptable risk criteria for nuclear waste management requires the translation of publicly determined goals and objectives into definitive issues which, in turn, require resolution. Since these issues are largely of a subjective nature, they cannot be resolved by technological methods. Development of acceptable risk criteria might best be accomplished by application of a systematic methodology for the optimal implementation of subjective values. Multi-attribute decision analysis … more

Meteorological evaluation of multiple reactor contamination probabilities for a Hanford Nuclear Energy Center

Description: The conceptual Hanford energy center is composed of nuclear power plants, hence the name Hanford Nuclear Energy Center (HNEC). Previous topical reports have covered a variety of subjects related to the HNEC including: electric power transmission, fuel cycle, and heat disposal. This report discusses the probability that a radiation release from a single reactor in the HNEC would contaminate other facilities in the center. The risks, in terms of reliability of generation, of this potential contam… more

Nuclear chemistry progress report. [Physics Department, Princeton University]

Description: Research in the physics department at Princeton University is reviewed briefly. Results on the Coulomb capture of negative muons by the binary alloy systems Cu/Al and Ag/Zn show that (within experimental error) there is no change in the per atom ..mu../sup -/ capture probability when the atomic ratio in these alloys varies over a range of approximately 40. The K muonic x-ray intensity pattern observed from ..mu.. capture in atmospheric N/sub 2/ was strikingly different from that observed when .… more

Laser-excited fluorescence spectroscopy of oxide glasses

Description: Laser-induced fluorescence line narrowing was applied to investigate the local fields and interactions of paramagnetic ions in oxide glasses. Studies included the site dependence of energy levels, radiative and nonradiative transition probabilities, homogeneous line broadening, and ion--ion energy transfer of rare earth ions. These results and the experimental techniques are reviewed briefly; the use of paramagnetic ions other than the rare earths is also considered. Recently, laser-excited flu… more

Effects seen in the interactions of fast molecular-ion beams with matter. [Angular distributions, dissociation, polorization, energy losses, transmitted fractions]

Description: Experimental results are presented from high resolution studies of the energy- and angle-distributions for the break-up products that arise from the dissociation of a variety of fast molecular ions in thin carbon foils and in gases. The results for foil targets are compared with calculations based on a model for the polarization ''wakes'' induced in foils by the passage of fast charged projectiles. An example is given of the application of this type of dissociation measureme… more

Uncertainty associated with selected environmental transport models

Description: A description is given of the capabilities of several models to predict accurately either pollutant concentrations in environmental media or radiological dose to human organs. The models are discussed in three sections: aquatic or surface water transport models, atmospheric transport models, and terrestrial and aquatic food chain models. Using data published primarily by model users, model predictions are compared to observations. This procedure is infeasible for food chain models and, therefor… more

MACRO1: a code to test a methodology for analyzing nuclear-waste management systems

Description: The code is primarily a manager of probabilistic data and deterministic mathematical models. The user determines the desired aggregation of the available models into a composite model of a physical system. MACRO1 then propagates the finite probability distributions of the inputs to the model to finite probability distributions over the outputs. MACRO1 has been applied to a sample analysis of a nuclear-waste repository, and its results compared satisfactorily with previously obtained Monte Carlo… more

Statistical model for assessing the risk of hail damage to any ground installation. Technical report, June 1978-March 1979

Description: This report describes a statistical model which has been developed to determine the risk of damage by large hail to any ground installation (such as a solar flat plate collector). The model is based on data for the number of haildays per year, hailstone size distribution, and storm severity (expressed in number of hailstones per square meter per storm). Other than parameters derived from the raw meteorological data available, the parameters of the model are the number of years of surface exposu… more

PROSA-1 : a Probabilistic Response-Surface Analysis Code

Description: Techniques for probabilistic response-surface analysis have been developed to obtain the probability distributions of the consequences of postulated nuclear-reactor accidents. The uncertainties of the consequences are caused by the variability of the system and model input parameters used in the accident analysis. Probability distributions are assigned to the input parameters, and parameter values are systematically chosen from these distributions. These input parameters are then used in determ… more

A Possible Event of Charmed Particle Decay via the (Weak) Neutral Current According to a Scheme M(c) --> e+ e- Hadrons

Description: In a stack of nuclear emulsion irradiated by 200 Gev/c {pi}{sup -}-mesons at FNAL, we have made a search for new short-lived particles by tracing all secondary tracks from the star in a cone of 0 < 0,1 rad up to the distance of 1 mm. The sample of stars consisted of 350 {pi}{sup -} N- and 250 {pi}{sup -} A-interactions. They have found one peculiar event. Among {pi}{sup -} A-interactions there is star of type 21 + 6 + 23 p in which one secondary prong (0{sub L} = 4,6{sup o}) gives at the dis… more

Confidence level in the calculations of HCDA consequences using large codes. [LMFBR]

Description: The probabilistic approach to nuclear reactor safety is playing an increasingly significant role. For the liquid-metal fast breeder reactor (LMFBR) in particular, the ultimate application of this approach could be to determine the probability of achieving the goal of a specific line-of-assurance (LOA). Meanwhile a more pressing problem is one of quantifying the uncertainty in a calculated consequence for hypothetical core disruptive accident (HCDA) using large codes. Such uncertainty arises fro… more

General reliability and safety methodology and its application to wind energy conversion systems

Description: In conventional system reliability calculations, each component may be in the Operable state or the Under Repair state. These calculations derive system unavailability, or the probability of the system's being down for repairs. By introducing a third component state between Operable and Under Repair - namely, Defective, But Defect Undetected - the methods developed in this report enable system safety projections to be made in addition to availability projections. Also provided is a mechani… more
