Experimental program to validate analyses of accelerator breeder concepts

Description: The concept of using high-energy particle accelerators to produce neutrons for converting fertile material to fissile is over 25 years old. It is only relatively recently that accelerator design has progressed to a point where the operation approaches commercial viability. Critical unknowns in the concept were identified in a detailed study of specic configurations. Experiments to elucidate these unknowns in a timely manner using existing material and facilities are defined and identified. Basi… more

Design study for achromatic and isochronous 180/sup 0/ bending systems for PIGMI. [TRANSPORT]

Description: A Pion Generator for Medical Irradiation (PIGMI) possessing many technical innovations is being developed at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. The heart of the PIGMI facility is a linear accelerator designed to provide a 650-MeV beam of protons at a beam current of 100 ..mu..A. The accelerator will be 120 m long and suitable for installation at major hospital sites. Obviously, a shorter machine may be more convenient to the medical profession. One possibility of reducing the total length of… more

Nonlinear characteristics of cyclotron waves in an ARA configuration. [Autoresonant accelerator]

Description: The Autoresonant Accelerator (ARA) offers great promise for collective ion acceleration provided large amplitude cyclotron waves can be generated with long coherence scales and controllable propagation characteristics. Numerical simulations have been performed to examine cyclotron wave growth in a helical slow-wave structure. No inhibition of growth was observed, short of an intrinsic space charge limitation. Extraction of such waves from the amplifying section through realistic terminations ha… more

Modulator charging system upgrade for a 5-MeV electron accelerator

Description: The Lawrence Livermore Laboratory is currently constructing a new linear induction accelerator with a higher beam current than the Astron accelerator. The new accelerator, called the Experimental Test Accelerator (ETA) will be a 5-MeV, 10-kA accelerator with a pulse width of 50-ns. Like the Astron, the principle of magnetic induction is used to obtain a linear accelerator. The modular accelerating cavities form essentially a 1:1 transformer and the change in flux in the ferrite core induces an … more

Compact 250-kV Injector System for PIGMI

Description: A 250-kV proton injector to be used in the development of a linac suitable for medical applications has been constructed. This injector utilizes a spherical Pierce geometry to produce a converging beam. A gas insulated accelerating column is cantilevered on a grounded vacuum system, with a separate high voltage equipment dome connected to a 300-kV Cockcroft-Walton power supply. The injector can be operated locally or remotely, with the remote control accomplished by a microprocessor system link… more

Mechanical engineering and design criteria for the Magnetically Insulated Transmission Experiment Accelerator

Description: A single-unit electron beam accelerator was designed, fabricated, and assembled in Sandia's Technical Area V to conduct magnetically insulated transmission experiments. Results of these experiments will be utilized in the future design of larger, more complex accelerators. This design makes optimum use of existing facilities and equipment. When designing new components, possible future applications were considered as well as compatibility with existing facilities and hardware.

Nuclear processes involved in electronuclear breeding

Description: The nuclear processes considered in a recent LLL assessment of electronuclear breeding of fissile material are described. The nuclear cross sections and neutron yields measured in the MTA program (1949-1954), and the nuclear cascade calculations carried out then and in more recent times are briefly described. The probable advantage of deuterons over protons as particles to be accelerated is mentioned, and the need for a series of experiments to determine the choice of particle, optimum accelera… more

Rock Excavation by Pulsed Electron Beams

Description: If an intense short pulse of megavolt electrons is deposited in a brittle solid, dynamic spalling can be made to occur with removal of material. Experiments were made on several types of hard rock; results are reproducible and well-described theoretically. An accelerator with a rapidly-pulsed scanning electron beam was designed that could tunnel in hard rock about ten times faster than conventional drill/blast methods.

Present and future sources of protons and heavy ions. [Medical facilities]

Description: A brief outline of existing medical heavy-ion facilities is given. The beam specifications for future dedicated medical ion accelerators are discussed. Machines capable of delivering dose rates of approximately 1 krad/min in volumes of a few liters are shown to represent existing technology. A cost and performance analysis shows the synchrotrons to be the most economical source for the heavier ions while conventional cyclotrons seem optimal for an exclusive proton facility. It is seen that the … more

Electronuclear fissile fuel production. Linear accelerator fuel regenerator and producer LAFR and LAFP

Description: A linear accelerator fuel generator is proposed to enrich naturally occurring fertile U-238 or thorium 232 with fissile Pu-239 or U-233 for use in LWR power reactors. High energy proton beams in the range of 1 to 3 GeV energy are made to impinge on a centrally located dispersed liquid lead target producing spallation neutrons which are then absorbed by a surrounding assembly of fabricated LWR fuel elements. The accelerator-target design is reviewed and a typical fuel cycle system and economic a… more

LASL Medical Radioisotope Research Program: an overview of LAMPF and the Isotope Production Facility

Description: In the early part of this decade, a research effort was initiated at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) to investigate the feasibility of utilizing proton-induced spallation reactions as a means of preparing radionuclides of known or potential value in the health sciences. The irradiation source consists of the excess 800 MeV proton beam that reaches the main beam stop of the Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF). A description is given of the LAMPF accelerator and the Iso… more

Optimizing kaon production

Description: Kaon production data is examined with the view toward producing high quality beams in the future. Emphasis is placed upon the low momentum region, below 1 GeV/c, where the behavior of the kaon momentum spectrum is shown to be dominated by strongly momentum dependent kinematic factors. No complete experimental survey of production cross sections at different incident proton energies exists from a single apparatus. Information on relative production yields for different proton energies is importa… more
