Study to determine the basic insulation level requirements for a prototype 1200 kV CGIT cable system

Description: The required lightning impulse withstand characteristics of a prototype 1200 kV CGIT System were studied. It was assumed that lightning overvoltages would be introduced into the CGIT System due to lightning strokes which terminate on the overhead transmission system connected to the CGIT system. A detailed analysis of several proposed configurations for 1100 to 1200 kV transmission lines indicated that the most probable form of lightning overvoltage introduced into the CGIT System would be caus… more

Energy analysis of the basic materials utilized in electric power transmission systems

Description: The energy content per mile of installed underground and overhead power transmission systems has been calculated for the following types of systems: self-contained oil-filled cables; HPOF pipe-type cables; extruded dielectric cables; compressed-gas-insulated systems; overhead lines (ac and dc) and two proposed superconducting systems (ac and dc). The system operating voltages analyzed included 138, 230, 345, 500, 765 and 1,200 kV for ac systems, but all systems were not analyzed at the higher v… more

Dynamic load model study for overhead transmission lines. Final report, November 1975--September 1976

Description: A study was undertaken to examine by scale models the dynamic longitudinal loadings on flexible transmission structures. In the course of the investigation certain new concepts have also been developed concerning the elements of a transmission line system which contributes to the local flexibility of individual structures. Further, new methods of analysis were devised for the future use by designers in this field. These model test results have demonstrated that it is possible to simulate a numb… more

Recent progress on system studies for long distance power transmission

Description: Two possible applications of helium-cooled underground cables for power transmission were studied to determine network characteristics and estimated costs. The first involved power transmission at 345 kV from a Long Island nuclear power plant to a substation 43 miles away. The second appication examined the feasibility of a 350 mi-long 550 kV transmission line from Western Pennsylvania to Allentown and Philadelphia. For both systems computer simulations were used to study operating characterist… more

Alternative Electrical Transmission Systems and Their Environmental Impact

Description: A general description is provided of electrical transmission systems as an aid in determining their environmental impacts. Alternating current, direct current, overhead systems, underground systems, and water crossings are treated. The cost, performance, reliability, safety, and environmental impact of these systems are compared.
