Assessment of existing and prospective piping technology for district-heating applications

Description: Data on design features and operational experience of 40 hot water and steam district-heating networks with an overall heat capacity of 18,000 MWt have been collected, systematized, and analyzed. Piping networks located in Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Sweden, USA, USSR, and West Germany have been analyzed and the data assembled. The data bank and analysis of the operational experience design features of hot water and steam district-heating networks are provided i… more

Asbestos--cement pipeline experience at the Raft River Geothermal Project

Description: The first buried asbestos-cement (Transite) pipeline used in high temperature (approximately 300/sup 0/F) service for transport of geothermal fluids was installed in the fall of 1975, and has seen 1/sup 1///sub 2/ years of service. The line is 4000 ft long, between the deep geothermal wells No. 1 and No. 2, in the Raft River Valley of Idaho. The experience in using this pipeline has been satisfactory, and methods have been developed for minimizing the thermal expansion/thermal shock breakage pr… more

Studies on prolonging HEPA filter service in chemical applications

Description: Activities directed toward gaining a better understanding of the performance of materials used in the construction of HEPA filters are described. The report discusses experiments in which materials were exposed to nitric and hydrofluoric acid vapors under controlled conditions in a specially constructed test chamber. In addition, observations are presented on filters tested in actual service. Finally work on cleanable prefilters is reviewed.

Radiation Carcinogenesis. Progress Report VI, 16 May 1978--15 May 1979

Description: Asbestos fibers, Canadian and Rhodesian chrysotile, have induced mesotheliomas and pleural plaques in mice and rats. The pathogenesis of the lesions is being studied. Proliferation of the adrenal cortical A cells is accelerated in time and enhanced in extent by ionizing radiation in female RAP mice. The development of cortical tumors was significantly correlated with extensive A cell proliferation. Whole-body protracted doses, above 500 rads, were followed by a 9% tumor incidence. Endocrine neo… more

Radiation Carcinogenesis. Progress Report V, 16 May 1977--15 May 1978

Description: Experiments are underway on the cocarcinogenic effects of asbestos and carcinogenic hydrocarbons using rats and mice as test objects. None of the protocols of these experiments have as yet been completed. The study of tumorigenesis in irradiated parabiont rats has been completed. Study of the benign tumors indicates that radiation is an effective neoplastic stimulus for only a limited number of organs and tissues, chiefly ovary, adrenal, mammary tissue, islands of Langerhans, and liver. In gene… more

Economic assessment of using nonmetallic materials in the direct utilization of geothermal energy. Final report

Description: The cost effectiveness of nonmetallic materials in three direct-use geothermal applications was assessed. An extensive review of the available literature was conducted in order to ascertain those processes for which sufficient design and cost data had been published to permit this economic assessment to be made. Only three such processes could be found and they are discussed.
