THE STRUCTURE OF THE SO-CALLED ''ETHYLMETAPHOSPHATE'' (LANGHELDESTER)

Description: Phosphorus pentoxide reacts with ether to form bicyclo-tetraphosphate ester (II), cyclotetraphosphate ester (III), isocyclotetraphosphate ester (IV), and tetraphosphate ester (V). Phosphorus n.m.r. measurements show the content of the mixtures. The so-called 'ethyl metaphosphate' (Langheld ester) is a mixture of III (50% to 45%), IV (36% to 25%), and V (14% to 30%).

CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY DIVISION, CHEMICAL DEVELOPMENT SECTION C, PROGRESS REPORT ON SEPARATIONS CHEMISTRY AND SEPARATIONS PROGRESS RESEARCH FOR JANUARY-JUNE 1963

Description: Cesium Recovery from Ores. Adaptation of the phenol extraction (Phenex) process to the recovery of cesium from ore leach liquors continued to show promise. In roast-leach tests, 98 to 99% of the cesium was dissolved from pollucite ore by roasting the ore at 800 deg C with 1.8 parts of Na/sub 2/CO/sub 3/ plus 1.2 parts of NaCl and leaching with water. More than 99% of the cesium was recovered from the leach liquor and separated from other alkali metals by extracting with 4-sec-butyl-2-( alpha -m… more

DISSOLUTION OF IRRADIATED CONSOLIDATED EDISON POWER-REACTOR FUEL BY THE SULFEX AND DAREX PROCESSES

Description: Losses of fertile and fissile materials during chemical decladding of irradiated prototype Consolidated Edison power-reactor fuel pins by the Sulfex and Darex processes were determined, on a laboratory scale, in all-glass apparatus. For air-fired low-density (-85 per cent of theoretical) fuel cores, minimum losses of uranium, thorium, and plutonium were in the 0.1 to 0.2 per cent range, by either process. These losses increased if the dejacketed cores were allowed to remain in contact with the … more
