PREPARATION OF YTTRIUM FLUORIDE IN FLUIDIZED BEDS

Description: The batch fluid-bed hydrofluorination of yttrium oxide to yttrium fluoride of low residual oxygen content was studied in a 3-inch Monel column. Bed temperature, hydrofluorination time, and hydrofluoric acid excess were studied, and the contamination due to equipment corrosion was determined. A sample of the fluoride was converted to metal and analyzed for impurities. A brief investigation of the reaction kinetics was also made on the thermobalance. (auth)

Separations of yttrium and some rare earths by liquid-liquid extraction

Description: The use of liquid-liquid extraction for the separation of some inorganic compounds was demonstrated. The yttrium-- rare earth concentrates were obtained from Fergusonite ore, Gadolinite ore, and a by-product from an ion-exchange resin separation process. In each case the mixture in terms of oxide was composed of from 50 to 60% yttrium and 5 to 15% heavy rare earths with the light rare earth fraction constituting the remaining material. Tributyl phosphate was generally employed for exracting nit… more

Progress Relating to Civilian Applications During October 1958

Description: Thermal-conductivity and electrical-resistivity measurements were made on U-1.5 wt,% Zr, encapsulated in Zircaloy-2 with a NaK thermal bond. Data are presented on thermal conductivity measurements made on UO/sub2/ specimens. A method of sink-float measurement to identify factors affecting irradiation- induced volume changes in graphite was continued. The stress-rupture and creep properties of 15% cold-worked Zircaloy-2 are being investigated in the 290 to 400 deg C temperature range in vacuum. … more
