HRT Reactor Hazards

Description: Several potential hazards that have been recognized and anticipated in the design and fabrication of the pressure vessel in the Homogeneous Reactor Test are discussed. These hazards results from the high operating pressure and temperature of the reactor, the exposure of the reactor vessel material to potential embrittlement and other affects of fast-neutron irradiation, and the need for containment of corrosive flowing liquids. The steps taken in recognition of these hazards are also discussed.… more

Aircraft Reactor Test Hazards Summary Report

Description: The successful completion of a program of experiments, including the Aircraft Reactor Experiment (ARE), has demonstrated the high probability of producing militarily useful aircraft nuclear power plants employing reflector-moderated circulating-fuel reactors. Consequently, and accelerated program culminating in operation of the Aircraft Reactor Test (ART) is under way. In order to adhere to the compressed schedule of the accelerated program, it is essential that the Atomic Energy Commission app… more

Static Electricity in Nature and Industry

Description: From Introduction: "In this bulletin "static electricity" is used in its commonly accepted meaning to include the various manifestations that result from the coming together or neutralization of positive and negative charges with have been separated by friction between unlike substances or otherwise. Although the scope of the this report is rather broad, it deals primarily with static electricity as a hazard. Casual and experimental observations recorded herein are thus given for a background a… more

Summary Hazards Report on Enriched Fuel Element Loading for the BNL Research Reactor

Description: Report issued by the Brookhaven National Laboratory discussing a hazards report on replacing the research center's current fuel elements with new highly enriched elements. As stated in the introduction, "this report is a summary of the studies, both theoretical and experimental, which have been made so far of the nuclear properties of the "new" pile, of the stability of the new fuel elements, and of the safety and practicability of operation of the "new" pile" (p. 2). This report includes table… more
