Heats of Formation of Energetic Oxetane Monomers and Polymers

Description: Energetic oxetane polymers have shown promise as performance-enhancing ingredients in gun and missile propellants. In order to correctly predict the performance of energetic materials containing these polymers, it is important to have accurate, experimentally determined values for the polymer heats of formation ({Delta}H{sub f}). In support of a theoretical study on gun propellant performance, heats of combustion were experimentally determined for a series of oxetane polymers and monomers (see … more

Direct methanol fuel cell performance using sulfonated poly (arylene ether sulfone) random copolymers as electrolytes.

Description: Sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) random copolymers are a new series of sulfonic acid containing polymers that have shown promise as fuel cell electrolytes. Here, we report on direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) performance of this class of polymers at sulfonation levels ranging from 40 to 60% (monomer basis). The DMFC performance of these polymers is compared to that of Nafion 117, the long standing standard in fuel cell testing. These polymers show a higher selectivity for protons over meth… more

COOPERATIVE RESEARCH IN C1 CHEMISTRY

Description: Faculty and students from five universities (Kentucky, West Virginia, Utah, Pittsburgh and Auburn) are collaborating on a basic research program to develop novel C1 chemistry processes for the production of clean, high quality transportation fuel. An Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) with members from Chevron, Eastman Chemical, Energy International, Teir Associates, and the Department of Defense has been formed to provide practical guidance to the program. The program has two principal objectives… more

Carbon Coated (Carbonous) Catalyst in Ebullated Bed Reactor for Production of Oxygenated Chemicals From Syngas/CO2, Annual Report: 2001

Description: There are a number of exothermic chemical reactions which might benefit from the temperature control and freedom from catalyst fouling provided by the ebullated bed reactor technology. A particularly promising area is production of oxygenated chemicals, such as alcohols and ethers, from synthesis gas, which can be economically produced from coal or biomass. The ebullated bed operation requires that the small-diameter ({approx}1/32 inch) catalyst particles have enough mechanical strength to avoi… more
