Assessment of Energy Efficiency Project Financing Alternatives for Brookhaven National Laboratory

Description: This document provides findings and recommendations that resulted from an assessment of the Brookhaven National Laboratory by a team from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to assess the site's potential for various alternative financing options as a means to implement energy-efficiency improvements. The assessment looked for life-cycle cost-effective energy-efficiency improvement opportunities, and through a series of staff interviews, evaluated the various methods by which these opportunit… more

The engineered phytoremediation of ionic and methylmercury pollution 70054yr.2000.doc

Description: Our long-term objective is to enable highly productive plant species to extract, resist, detoxify, and/or sequester toxic heavy metal pollutants (Meagher, 2000). We have focused our research on the phytoremediation of soil and water-borne ionic and organic mercury (Meagher and Rugh, 1996; Meagher et al., 2000). Mercury pollution is a serious world-wide problem affecting the health of human and wild-life populations. The Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Brookhaven Nationa… more

Proposal for an EBIS Based RHIC Preinjector

Description: A proposed new heavy ion preinjector for RHIC is described. The progress made at BNL on the development of an Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS) has increased our confidence that one can build a preinjector meeting RHIC requirements using an EBIS producing intermediate charge state heavy ions. A new RFQ and Linac will be required to accelerate beams from this source to an energy sufficient for injection into the AGS Booster. These are both straightforward devices, very similar to ones already in o… more

Design Issues for the RHIC EBIS

Description: Promising results are currently being obtained on the BNL Electron Beam Test Stand (EBTS), which is a prototype for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) EBIS. Based on the present-results, a proposal has been made regarding the general design of the RHIC EBIS. During the next year experiments will be made to investigate physics issues and beam properties important to the detailed design of the RHIC EBIS. Below we have outlined some of the physics issues to be explored experimentally, beam… more

EBTS: Design and Experimental Study

Description: Experimental study of the BNL Electron Beam Test Stand (EBTS), which is a prototype of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS), is currently underway. The basic physics and engineering aspects of a high current EBIS implemented in EBTS are outlined and construction of its main systems is presented. Efficient transmission of a 10 A electron beam through the ion trap has been achieved. Experimental results on generation of multiply charged ions with both continu… more

Laboratory Directed Research and Development Program Annual Report to the Department of Energy for Fiscal Year 1999. The Department of Energy, December 1999.

Description: In FY 1999, the BNL LDRD Program funded 33 projects, 25 of which were new starts, at a total cost of $4,525,584. A table is presented which lists all of the FY 1999 funded projects and gives a history of funding for each by year. Several of these projects have already experienced varying degrees of success as indicated in the individual Project Program Summaries which are given. A total of 29 informal publications (abstracts, presentations, reports and workshop papers) were reported and an addi… more

Temperature dependent ENDF/B-VI, release 7 cross section library

Description: The ENDF/B data library has recently been updated and is now freely available through the National Nuclear Data Center (NNDC), Brookhaven National Laboratory. This most recent library is identified as ENDF/B-VI, Release 7. Release 7 completely supersedes all preceding releases. As distributed the ENDF/B-VI, Release 7 data includes cross sections represented in the form of a combination of resonance parameters and/or tabulated energy dependent cross sections, nominally at 0 Kelvin temperature. F… more

OZONE PRODUCTION IN THE PHOENIX URBAN PLUME.

Description: In May and June of 1998, the Department of Energy's Atmospheric Chemistry Program conducted an aircraft and surface based field campaign in Phoenix, Arizona, with the overall goal of obtaining a mechanistic understanding of O{sub 3} formation in the metropolitan area. Participants in the study included scientists from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, Argonne National Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. On most days, afternoon O{… more

Viscous liquid barrier demonstration at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Linac Isotope Producer

Description: Groundwater monitoring has detected tritium ({sup 3}H) and {sup 22}Na contamination down gradient from the Brookhaven LINAC Isotope Producer (BLIP), located at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). Site characterization studies indicate that the BLIP is the source of contamination. The highest measured values for {sup 3}H were 52,400 pCi/L recorded less than 100 feet south (down gradient) of the BLIP facility. The BLIP produces radioisotopes that are crucial in nuclear medicine for both researc… more

Rare K+ Decays from Experiment E787

Description: This paper presents the latest results from experiment E787, at Brookhaven National Laboratory, on K{sup +} {r_arrow} {pi}{sup +} {nu}{bar {nu}} and radiative K{sup +} decays. The result for K{sup +} {r_arrow} {pi}{sup +} {nu}{bar {nu}} uses data collected in runs taken during 1995, 1996 and 1997. In addition, they discuss plans for future measurements of K{sup +} {r_arrow} {pi}{sup +} {nu}{bar {nu}}.

OO Model of Star Detector for Simulation, Visualization and Reconstruction

Description: The Solenoidal Tracker At RHIC (STAR) is a large acceptance collider detector, at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Most of the detailed knowledge on the STAR detector is implemented into a GEANT3 based simulation model. This knowledge certainly is valuable for the new STAR OO software. STAR ROOT-based framework was upgraded to provide tools to access this model via a set of TVolume classes. In this paper we present our experience with migration of the GEANT3 based detector simulation for STAR to… more

Brookhaven National Laboratory Source Water Assessment for Drinking Water Supply Wells

Description: The BNL water supply system meets all water quality standards and has sufficient pumping and storage capacity to meet current and anticipated future operational demands. Because BNL's water supply is drawn from the shallow Upper Glacial aquifer, BNL's source water is susceptible to contamination. The quality of the water supply is being protected through (1) a comprehensive program of engineered and operational controls of existing aquifer contamination and potential sources of new contaminatio… more
