B-Quark Inclusive Cross Sections and B{Bar B} Correlations Using Dimuons From the D0 Experiment

Description: Using dimuons collected with the D{null} detector during the 1993- 1995 Tevatron collider run, we have measured the {ital b}-quark cross section and {ital b{anti b}} correlations as given by the difference in azimuthal angle between the two muons. Both measurements agree with the NLO QCD predictions within experimental and theoretical errors.

Manifestations of the axial anomaly in finite temperature QCD

Description: We compute the flavor singlet meson correlators and screening masses in quenched and N{sub {ital f}} = 2 QCD at N{sub {ital t}} = 8. The consequences of our results for the realization of the U{sub A}(1) symmetry at finite T are discussed and an interpretation of our measurements in terms of the behavior of the low lying fermionic modes is proposed.

The waveform correlation event detection system project, Phase I: Issues in prototype development and testing

Description: A study using long-period seismic data showed that seismic events can be detected and located based on correlations of processed waveform profiles with the profile expected for an event. In this technique both time and space are discretized and events are found by forming profiles and calculating correlations for all time-distance points. events are declared at points with large correlations. In the first phase of the Waveform Correlation Event Detection System (WCEDS) Project at Sandia Labs we… more

A generalized correlation for condensation on vertical fluted surfaces

Description: A correlation was developed for laminar film condensation on vertical fluted surfaces. The theoretical analysis of Panchal and Bell was used for defining important physical property groups. The experimental data of Combs et al. were used to validate the proposed correlation. The experimental database used in the present study included four flute geometries that could be approximated to cosine type flutes and seven fluids. The resulting correlation can predict the average condensate heat-transfe… more

Critical exponents for the 3D Ising model

Description: The authors present a status report on the ongoing analysis of the 3D Ising model with nearest-neighbor interactions using the Monte Carlo Renormalization Group (MCRG) and finite size scaling (FSS) methods on 64{sup 3}, 128{sup 3}, and 256{sup 3} simple cubic lattices. Their MCRG estimates are K{sup c}{sub nn} = 0.221655(1)(1) and {nu} = 0.625(1). The FSS results for K{sup c} are consistent with those from MCRG but the value of {nu} is not. Their best estimate {eta} = 0.025(6) covers the spread… more

Large scale simulations of melting in two dimensional Lennard-Jones systems: Evidence for a metastable hexatic phase

Description: In 1995, North Americans installed $5 billion in efficiency equipment in their buildings in order to save money and conserve energy and water. But this covers only a small fraction of the existing cost-effective opportunities for energy savings investments. If all cost-effective efficiency investments were made in public and commercial buildings, the United States would save $20 billion per year on energy bills, create over 100,000 jobs, and significantly cut pollution. When firms invest in ene… more

Assessment of cavity dispersal correlations for possible implementation in the CONTAIN code

Description: Candidate models and correlations describing entrainment and dispersal of core debris from reactor cavities in direct containment heating (DCH) event, are assessed against a data base of approximately 600 experiments performed previously at Brookhaven National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories reactor cavities was studied. Cavity geometries studied are those of the Surry and Zion nuclear power plants and scale factors of 1/42 and 1/10 were studied for both geometries. Other parameters… more

On measuring the top quark mass using the dilepton decay modes

Description: We demonstrate a new likelihood method for extracting the top quark mass from events of the type {ital t}{ital {anti t}} {r_arrow} {ital b}W{sup +}({ital lepton+{nu}}){ital {anti b}}W{sup -}({ital lepton+{nu}}). This method estimates the top quark mass correctly from an ensemble of dilepton events. The method proposed by Dalitz and Goldstein is shown to result in a systematic underestimation of the top quark mass. Effects due to the spin correlations between the top and anti-top quarks are show… more

Applications of RQMD to Bose-Einstein correlations

Description: Source size parameters measured via two-particle interferometry in experiment NA44 for 200 GeV/nucleon S+Pb collisions are compared to calculations using the RQMD event generator. Reasonable agreement is found in most cases. Based on this agreement, the model is used to study some of the interesting details of the collision dynamics which are not easily measured. 27 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab.

Directed flow and particle production in Au+Au collisions from experiment E877 at the AGS

Description: In this article we summarize recent results on the study of Au+Au collisions at 10.8A GeV/c obtained at the AGS by the E877 Collaboration. New results on the directed sideward flow are presented. In particular, the dependence of proton and pion production on the direction of the reaction plane will be discussed. It is shown that the sideward flow is mainly due to nucleons and that pions show little flow effects. Two-pion correlation functions are studied to derive the density at freeze-out. Fur… more

Jet azimuthal decorrelation studies with the D-zero detector

Description: Experimental results on the measurement of the azimuthal decorrelation between jets with pseudorapidity separation up to five units are presented. The data were taken at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory during the 1992-1993 collider run with the D{null} detector using {ital p{anti p}} collisions at center-of-mass energy {radical}{ital s} = 1.8 TeV. These results are compared to next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD predictions and to two leading-log approximations (LLA) where the leading ter… more
