Preliminary 2D design study for A&PCT

Description: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is currently designing and constructing a tomographic scanner to obtain the most accurate possible assays of radioactivity in barrels of nuclear waste in a limited amount of time. This study demonstrates a method to explore different designs using laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. In particular, we examine the trade-off between spatial resolution and signal-to-noise. The simulations are conducted in two dimensions as a preliminary study for… more

Parameters of the SLAC Next Linear Collider

Description: In this paper, the authors present the parameters and layout of the Next Linear Collider (NLC). The NLC is the SLAC design of a future linear collider using X-band RF technology in the main linacs. The collider would have an initial center-of-mass energy of 0.5 TeV which would be upgraded to 1 TeV and then 1.5 TeV in two stages. The design luminosity is > 5 {times} 10{sup 33} cm{sup {minus}2} sec {sup {minus}1} at 0.5 TeV and > 10{sup 34} cm{sup {minus}2} sec{sup {minus}1} at 1.0 and 1.5 TeV. T… more

Fast detection of 14 MeV neutrons on the TFTR neutron collimator

Description: Current mode operation of the NE451 ZnS Scintillation Detectors of the TFTR Neutron Collimator has enabled us to record the development of radial neutron emission profiles with much faster speed and higher accuracy than in the pulse counting mode. During high-power DT operation, the intrinsic shot noise on the detector traces was so low that the authors could observe sawtooth instabilities and disruptions with good precision and, in addition, were able to identify precursor MHD activity and fis… more

Wakefield and the diffraction model due to a flat beam moving past a conducting wedge

Description: A collimator is often used to clean a beam of its excessive tail particles. If the beam intensity is high enough or if the beam is brought too close to the collimator, however, the wakefields generated by the beam-collimator interaction can cause additional beam tails to grow, thus defeating, or even worsening, the beam-tail cleaning process. The wakefield generated by a sheet beam moving past a conducting wedge has been obtained in closed form by Henke using the method of conformal mapping. Th… more
