The effects of load-sensitive behavior on the operability margins of motor-operated gate valves

Description: Testing of motor-operated gate valves at various loads has produced a phenomenon we call load-sensitive behavior. This phenomenon has a significant effect on the accuracy of the methods used (and proposed) in the nuclear industry for determining that these valves can perform their design basis function. A valve subjected to tests with low flow and pressure loadings may achieve a stem thrust (at seating) analytically determined to be adequate for design basis flows and pressures, but this is no … more

Monitoring of soft high damping elastomeric bearings for earthquake isolation

Description: Over the last 20 years several practical systems for the protection of buildings and their contents against the effects of earthquakes were developed. These systems rely on effectively decoupling the building from the strong horizontal ground accelerations that are some of the most damaging features of an earthquake. The isolation of small buildings against earthquakes poses particular problems for high damping elastomer. systems. It was recognized that one way to overcome these problems was to… more

Cold Mass Support System for he D0 Solenoid

Description: The support system is designed to support the gravitational, magnetic, and thermal contraction loads associated with the cold mass weighing 1.46 metric tons (3210 Ibm). The loading constraints are listed in Table 1. The support system consists of axial members (axial supports) to provide longitudinal stiffness and nearly tangential members (radial supports) to provide radial stiffness. The members connect the outer support cylinder to the flat annular bulkheads of the vacuum vessel. See Figures… more

Energy Efficient Drivepower: An Overview.

Description: This report examines energy efficiency in drivepower systems. Only systems where the prime movers are electrical motors are discussed. A systems approach is used to examine all major aspects of drivepower, including motors, controls, electrical tune-ups, mechanical efficiency, maintenance, and management. Potential annual savings to the US society of $25 to $50 billion are indicated. The report was written for readers with a semi-technical background.

Current leads and magnetic bearings

Description: Since the discovery of high-temperature superconductors (HTSs), Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) has been active in a broad spectrum of activities in developing these materials for applications. Work at every stage of development has involved industrial collaboration in order to accelerate commercialization. While most of the development work has been devoted to improving the properties of current-carrying wires, some effort has been devoted to applications that can utilize HTSs with propertie… more

Seismic response of a base-isolated building with high damping, low shear modulus elastomeric bearings

Description: This paper deals with an investigation of seismic responses of a base-isolated building subjected to actual earthquakes. The isolation system consists of six medium shape factor, high damping, low shear modulus bearings designed by ANL and manufactured in the United Kingdom. The objective is two-fold: (1) to study the effectiveness of the isolated bearings through responses of the test building under actual earthquakes, and (2) to validate the 3-D SISEC (Seismic Isolation System Evaluation Code… more

Particle migration through sealed bearings

Description: Tests were performed to determine the ability of various types of shielded bearings to isolate particulate from a clean environment in support of the Direct Optical Initiation (DOI) program. In the DOI firing system, a stronglink mechanism will share the same environment with a high-powered laser which needs uncontaminated optics to perform properly. Two commercially available shielded and sealed bearings were tested along with a sealed bearing designed at Allied Signal Inc., Kansas City Divisi… more

Frequency and temperature dependence of high damping elastomers

Description: High damping steel-laminated elastomeric seismic isolation bearings are one of the preferred devices for isolating large buildings and structures. In the US, the current reference design for the Advanced Liquid Metal Reactor (ALMR) uses laminated bearings for seismic isolation. These bearings are constructed from alternating layers of high damping rubber and steel plates. They are typically designed for shear strains between 50 and 100% and are expected to sustain two to three times these level… more

Disks of YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7} shocked to 10 GPa pressures

Description: The brittle superconducting oxide YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7} was shocked to 6.6 and 10.3 GPa without macroscopic fracture. The melt-textured disk-shaped specimen was preferentially oriented and was shock-compressed at an angle of about 30{degrees} from the effective c axis of this orthorhombic-phase specimen. Subsequent anneals of the 6.6 GPa specimen in oxygen at 890{degrees}C produced a magnetic hysteresis which is enhanced relative to the initial unshocked state, as expected for shock-induc… more

Design of gasifiers to optimize fuel cell systems. Final report, September 1990--September 1993

Description: Pursuing the key national goal of clean and efficient utilization of the abundant domestic coal resources for power generation, this study was conducted to evaluate the potential of optimizing the integrated catalytic gasification/carbonate fuel cell power generation system. ERC in close collaboration with Fluor Daniel (providing engineering design and costing), conducted a detailed system configuration study to evaluate various catalytic gasification/carbonate fuel cell power plant configurati… more

Dynamic characteristics of Bridgestone low shear modulus-high damping seismic isolation bearings

Description: Bridgestone Company of Japan is one of the leading seismic bearing manufacturers in the world. Their bearings have very good performance records. It appears that Bridgestone`s high damping bearings are made of a blend of filled natural and synthetic rubbers with fillers and plastizers whereas in the United States, the high damping compound is a carbon filled natural rubber. To compare the properties of the two different kinds of high damping compounds, Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) purchase… more

Seismic response of base-isolated buildings using a viscoelastic model

Description: Due to recent developments in elastomer technology, seismic isolation using elastomer bearings is rapidly gaining acceptance as a design tool to enhance structural seismic margins and to protect people and equipment from earthquake damage. With proper design of isolators, the fundamental frequency of the structure can be reduced to a value that is lower than the dominant frequencies of earthquake ground motions. The other feature of an isolation system is that it can provide a mechanism for ener… more
