Client/Server distributed processing using SunOS remote procedure protocol

Description: Over the last ten years the development of PC's and workstations has changed the way computing is performed. Previously, extensive computations were performed on large high speed mainframe machines with substantial storage capacity. Large capital and operational costs were associated with these machines. The advent of more powerful workstations has brought more computational cycles to the users at lower cost than was achieved with busy timesharing systems. However, many users still can't afford… more

Development of a numerical computer code and circuit element models for simulation of firing systems

Description: Numerical simulation of firing systems requires both the appropriate circuit analysis framework and the special element models required by the application. We have modified the SPICE circuit analysis code (version 2G.6), developed originally at the Electronic Research Laboratory of the University of California, Berkeley, to allow it to be used on MSDOS-based, personal computers and to give it two additional circuit elements needed by firing systems--fuses and saturating inductances. An interact… more

The design of a scalable, fixed-time computer benchmark

Description: By using the principle of fixed time benchmarking, it is possible to compare a very wide range of computers, from a small personal computer to the most powerful parallel supercomputer, an a single scale. Fixed-time benchmarks promise far greater longevity than those based on a particular problem size, and are more appropriate for grand challenge'' capability comparison. We present the design of a benchmark, SLALOM{trademark}, that scales automatically to the computing power available, and corre… more

Reviews of computing technology: Client-server technology

Description: One of the most frequently heard terms in the computer industry these days is client-server.'' There is much misinformation available on the topic, and competitive pressures on software vendors have led to a great deal of hype with little in the way of supporting products. The purpose of this document is to explain what is meant by client-server applications, why the Advanced Technology and Architecture (ATA) section of the Information Resources Management (IRM) Department sees this emerging te… more

An evaluation of three models designed for siting wind turbines in areas of complex terrain

Description: The aim of this study was to compare the ability of three micrositing models to simulate the wind flow in complex terrain. One of these models, NOABL, is a mass-consistent model while the other two, MS3DJH/3R and BZ, are descendants of Jackson-Hunt (J-H) theory. All three models were applied to two areas of complex terrain, Askervein Hill in Scotland and Altamont Pass in California. Askervein Hill is an isolated hill of moderate slope surrounded by a flat plain. In marked contrast, the terrain … more

Automated Angular Momentum Recoupling Algebra

Description: We describe a code, RACAH, for algebraic solution of angular momentum recoupling problems. The general problem is to find an optimal path from one binary tree (representing the angular momentum coupling scheme for the reduced matrix element) to another (representing the sub-integrals and spin sums to be done). RACAH is implemented on a MS-DOS microcomputer, using the SCHEME dialect of LISP. 6 refs.

Miscellaneous equipment in commercial buildings: The inventory, utilization, and consumption by equipment type

Description: The nature of the miscellaneous equipment (devices other than permanently installed lighting and those used for space conditioning) in commercial buildings is diverse, comprising a wide variety of devices that are subject to varied patterns of use. This portion of the commercial load is frequently underestimated, and widely hypothesized to be growing. These properties make it a particularly difficult load to characterize for purposes of demand-side management. In the End-Use Load and Consumer A… more

High speed acquisition of multi-parameter data using a Macintosh II CX

Description: Accelerator mass spectrometry systems based on >3MV tandem accelerators often use multi-anode ionization detectors and/or time-of-flight detectors to identify individual isotopes through multi-parameter analysis. A Macintosh llcx has been programmed to collect AMS data from a CAMAC-implemented analyzer and to display the histogrammed individual parameters and a double-parameter array. The computer-CAMAC connection is through a Nu-Bus to CAMAC dataway interface which allows direct addressing to … more

The use of a spreadsheet in the design of accelerator components

Description: This work was undertaken to explore the capabilities of user-friendly technology in building an easy-to-use tool that could be applied to formulate quickly a workable design for a radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ). The tool will be extended to include additional components. This paper outlines the derivation of scaling laws from which we obtained a set of self-consistent equations that describe the behavior of an RFQ. These equations are relations between accelerator parameters (electric, field,… more

Automated tank calibration system using a portable computer

Description: Manual tank calibrations often have variabilities of both a random and systematic nature that often affect the quality of the data collected for determining accurate calibration equations. When performing the calibration run, data omissions and transcriptions often occur (forgetting to tare weigh the prover vessel or miswriting a displayed value). A computer can be used to minimize these errors associated with the logging of data. This paper describes a IBM compatible, portable computer based s… more

Probability computations using the SIGMA-PI method on a personal computer

Description: The SIGMA-PI ({Sigma}{Pi}) method as implemented in the SIGPI computer code, is designed to accurately and efficiently evaluate the probability of Boolean expressions in disjunctive normal form given the base event probabilities. The method is not limited to problems in which base event probabilities are small, nor to Boolean expressions that exclude the compliments of base events, nor to problems in which base events are independent. The feasibility of implementing the {Sigma}{Pi} method on a … more
