H-Area Seepage Basins

Description: During the third quarter of 1990 the wells which make up the H-Area Seepage Basins (H-HWMF) monitoring network were sampled. Laboratory analyses were performed to measure levels of hazardous constituents, indicator parameters, tritium, nonvolatile beta, and gross alpha. A Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (GCMS) scan was performed on all wells sampled to determine any hazardous organic constituents present in the groundwater. The primary contaminants observed at wells monitoring the H-Area Se… more

Biological Production of Ethanol From Coal

Description: A batch kinetic study involving Clostridium lungdahlii in a mineral medium was carried out in order to provide baseline data for the effects of nutrients on product ratio and kinetics. The use of this minimal medium containing vitamins, minerals, select amino acids and salts showed both a lower maximum specific growth rate and a lower maximum specific uptake rate than found when using a complex medium supplemented with 0.01% yeast extract. At the same time, the product ratio was improved slight… more

The search for low photodesorption coatings

Description: Low photo desorption (PSD) from surfaces of vacuum chambers increases the beam lifetime and reduces the cost of the pumping system of any storage ring. In compact rings where all radiated power ({approximately}10 kW) is incident on a few meters only, low PSD and good thermal conductivity of photon absorbers are of particular importance. An experimental chamber in which one meter long bars can be exposed to white photon beam with 500 eV critical energy has been built and installed on the U10B be… more

Photoinitiated electron transfer in multi-chromophoric species: Synthetic tetrads and pentads

Description: This research project involves the design, synthesis and study of the molecules which mimic many of the important aspects of photosynthetic electron and energy transfer. Specifically, the molecules are designed to mimic the following aspects of natural photosynthetic multistep electron transfer: electron donation from a tetrapyrrole excited singlet state, electron transfer between tetrapyrroles, electron transfer from tetrapyrroles to quinones, and electron transfer between quinones with differ… more

Preliminary evaluation of an electromagnetic concept for simultaneous NO sub x /SO sub 2 removal

Description: Western Research Institute is developing concepts to use radio frequency (RF) energy to remove NO and SO{sub 2} from combustion flue gas. Char produced from the mild gasification of coal can be heated with RF energy to react with sulfur oxides and nitric oxide at low temperatures and pressures using RF energy to form carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, elemental sulfur, and nitrogen.

Low cost hydrogen/novel membrane technology for hydrogen separation from synthesis gas

Description: The production of hydrogen from synthesis gas made by gasification of coal is expensive. The separation of hydrogen from synthesis gas is a major cost element in the total process. In this report we describe the results of a program aimed at the development of membranes and membrane modules for the separation and purification of hydrogen from synthesis gas. The performance properties of the developed membranes were used in an economic evaluation of membrane gas separation systems in the coal ga… more

Effects of in-situ oil-shale retorting on water quality near Rock Springs, Wyoming, Volume 1

Description: Experimental in-situ retorting techniques (methods of extracting shale oil without mining) were used from 1969 to 1979 by the Department of Energy's (DOE) Laramie Energy Technology Center (LETC) at a test area near Rock Springs in southwestern Wyoming. The retorting experiments at site 9 have produced elevated concentrations of some contaminants in the ground water. During 1988 and 1989, the US Geological Survey, in cooperation with the US Department of Energy, conducted a site characterization… more

Forming of silicon nitride by gelcasting

Description: Gelcasting is a near-net-shape forming technique that is applicable to various types of powders. It is accomplished by casting a concentrated suspension of a commercial ceramic powder in a solution of a polymerizable monomer and then polymerizing. The monomer used in the process is acrylamide which undergoes a vinyl polymerization. A filled gel is formed, which is dried and processed further. Gelcasting of alumina, sialon and silicon nitride has been carried out as the principal part of the Oak… more

The hardness and elastic modulus of TiN films as determined by ultra-low load indentation

Description: The mechanical properties of a series of titanium nitride films on stainless steel substrates have been evaluated using an indentation technique with a mechanical properties microprobe (MPM). The MPM makes possible measurement of film properties without contribution by the substrate material. The titanium nitride films were deposited with a PVD technique known as sputter ion plating (SIP). Deposition substrate bias was varied from 0 to {minus}120 V, while keeping other deposition parameters con… more

Intramolecular energy transfer reactions in polymetallic

Description: This report is concerned with intramolecular, energy-transfer reactions. The concept of preparing synthetically a complex molecular species, capable of absorbing a photon at one metal center (antenna fragment), transferring that energy to a second metal center (reactive fragment) via a bridging ligand was first reported by our group in 1979. It is now apparent that a major emphasis in inorganic chemistry in the future will involve these types of molecular ensembles. Complexes discussed include … more
