Late transition metal. mu. -oxo and. mu. -imido complexes

Description: The synthesis and reactions of late-transition-metal oxo and imido complexes was explored. The deprotonation of platinum(II) hydroxo complexes yielded new oxo complexes. Attempted deprotonation of Cp*Rh(III) hydroxo complexes did not give oxo complexes but complex mixtures probably resulting from reduction of the Rh(III) center. The reaction of Na/Hg with (Cp*RhCl{sub 2}){sub 2} gave the very reactive Rh(II) dimer, (Cp*RhCl){sub 2}. Rhodium(I) imido complexes with the bis(dimethylphosphino)meth… more

A simple plane-wave explosive lens

Description: A simple plane-wave lens, using an inert central plastic wave shaper, has been designed. An experiment was done with a 4-in. diam, zeroth-order design. An iterative technique that uses measured time deviations to correct the next wave shape was developed. Two identical versions of the first iterated shape were fired. Arrival-time deviations in these first iterates fell within 50-ns bounds. With greater care and further iteration, lenses bound by 10-ns deviations seem possible. 4 refs., 22 figs.

The economics of long-term global climate change

Description: This report is intended to provide an overview of economic issues and research relevant to possible, long-term global climate change. It is primarily a critical survey, not a statement of Administration or Department policy. This report should serve to indicate that economic analysis of global change is in its infancy few assertions about costs or benefits can be made with confidence. The state of the literature precludes any attempt to produce anything like a comprehensive benefit-cost analysi… more

Mechanism of hydrodenitrogenation (Part 4) infrared spectroscopy of acidic molybdena catalysts

Description: Mo oxide catalysts supported over a complete series of silica-aluminas have been characterized in the oxidic and reduced states, by means of total acidity measurements and by infrared spectroscopy. Ammonia chemisorption was used to titrate the total acidity of the catalysts, and IR absorption of adsorbed pyridine to distinguish Bronsted from Lewis acid sites. The formation of new acidity upon deposition of molybdena on silica-alumina supports was then explained on the basis of a simple surface … more

Solid-state decomposition kinetics of pentaerythritol tetranitrate

Description: Decomposition of pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) was monitored at constant volume under variable pressures of NO{sub 2} using differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). Decomposition involved a slow initial reaction followed by an autocatalytic transition at longer times. The apparent induction time(time-to-maximum rate) for autocatalysis was found to be dependent upon sample mass and the initial pressure of NO{sub 2}. A global kinetic model consistent with observed product distributions and t… more

Polarized absorption spectra of flavin mononucleotide in flavodoxin crystals

Description: Although it has long been recognized that protein environments modulate the electronic structure of flavins, the precise nature of the interactions that lead to a specific effect are still poorly understood. Detailed knowledge of flavin environments from high resolution crystal structures of flavoproteins, coupled with spectroscopic measurements and molecular orbital calculations should begin to clarify the relative importance of the various possible interactions in a given system. Changes in o… more

Thermal energy storage for an integrated coal gasification combined-cycle power plant

Description: This study investigates the use of molten nitrate salt thermal energy storage in an integrated gasification combined-cycle power plant allowing the facility to economically provide peak- and intermediate-load electric power. The results of the study show that an integrated gasification combined-cycle power plant with thermal energy storage can reduce the cost of coal-fired peak- or intermediate-load electric power by between 5% and 20% depending on the plants operating schedule. The use of dire… more

Proof of concept testing of the advanced NOXSO flue gas cleanup process

Description: The objective of this project is to demonstrate the potential for application of the NOXSO Flue Gas Treatment (FGT) technology to coal-fired utility boilers in the 1990s. To accomplish this, the NOXSO team will design, construct, operate, and test a proof-of-concept scale NOXSO test facility at Ohio Edison's Toronto Station. Performance analysis of a mixed nitride fuel system for an advanced liquid metal reactor

Description: The conceptual development and analysis of a proposed mixed nitride driver and blanket fuel system for a prototypic advanced liquid metal reactor design has been performed. As a first step, an intensive literature survey was completed on the development and testing of nitride fuel systems. Based on the results of this survey, prototypic mixed nitride fuel and blanket pins were designed and analyzed using the SIEX computer code. The analysis predicted that the nitride fuel consistently operated … more

Rate constants for the reaction, O( sup 3 P) + H sub 2 O r equilibrium OH + OH, over the temperature range 1053K to 2033K using two direct techniques

Description: The rate constant for the reaction of O({sup 3}P) with H{sub 2}O (reaction (1)) was measured over the temperature range 1288K {le} T {le} 2033K using the flash photolysis-shock tube technique and at 1053, 1090 and 1123K using the flash photolysis-resonance fluorescence method. The photolytic source for O({sup 3}P) atoms was nitric oxide. Interactions of selected bacterial isolates with DBT and solubilized coal

Description: We are studying the interactions of isolated bacteria with dibenzothiophene (DBT), a sulfur-containing model compound, and with a solubilized coal product derived from a high-organic-sulfur lignite. The sensitivity of the tetrazolium assay used to identify and study these strains was improved by substituting tetrazolium violet for triphenyltetrazolium. DBT metabolism by thirteen strains was investigated using qualitative and quantitative GC and GC-MS analyses. Growth medium and incubation time … more

The effects of climate change on the nitrogen cycle and acid deposition

Description: Increases in greenhouse gases are expected to lead to a number of changes to the atmosphere which may impact regional and global chemical cycles. With the increasing awareness of climate change and the possibility of global chemical changes to the atmosphere, it becomes important to ask whether these changes to global climate and chemical cycles might benefit or hinder control programs aimed at reducing acid deposition. In the following, we review several possible changes to climate that may be… more

The SCR technology involves the catalytic reduction of NH{sub 3} which is injected into the flue gas to react with NOx contained in the flue gas to produce molecular nitrogen (N{sub 2}) and water vapor. This quarter, work was initiated on the pilot plant ductwork layout, flue gas distribution and flow control co… more

NO sub x -char reactions: Kinetics and transport aspects

Description: The present project is motivated by the need to reduce NO{sub x} emissions from combustors, especially coal combustors. Reactions with carbon are known to be effective at reducing No to N{sub 2}, and remain interesting candidates in a wide variety of possible applications. These reactions are known to be important in reducing NO{sub x} emissions from fluidized bed coal combustors, in which the coal char itself serves as the reducing agent. The principal goal of this project is to develop a mech… more
