Seismic component fragility data base for IPEEE

Description: Seismic probabilistic risk assessment or a seismic margin study will require a reliable data base of seismic fragility of various equipment classes. Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) has selected a group of equipment and generically evaluated the seismic fragility of each equipment class by use of existing test data. This paper briefly discusses the evaluation methodology and the fragility results. The fragility analysis results when used in the Individual Plant Examination for External Even… more

Identification and assessment of containment and release management strategies

Description: Brookhaven National Laboratory, under the auspices of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, is investigating accident management strategies which could help preserve containment integrity or minimize releases during a severe accident. The objective is to make use of existing plant systems and equipment in innovative ways to reduce the likelihood of containment failure or to mitigate the release of fission products to the environment if failure cannot be prevented. Many of the strategies would b… more

Status of the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) toroidal volume H sup minus source

Description: A volume H{sup {minus}} source having a toroidal discharge chamber and conical filter field has been developed. Parametric studies of this source have been in progress for two years. Extraction apertures from 0.5 cm{sup 2} to 1.87 cm{sup 2} have been tried, and an H {sup {minus}} current of up to 48 mA has been extracted. The electron-to-H {sup {minus}} current ratio in the extracted beam can be as low as 10 for {approx} 25 mA beam was 0.44{pi}mm mrad. When operating with deuterium, the D{sup {… more

Tiger Team assessment of the Brookhaven National Laboratory

Description: This report documents the results of the Department of Energy's (DOE's) Tiger Team Assessment conducted at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in Upton, New York, between March 26 and April 27, 1990. The BNL is a multiprogram laboratory operated by the Associated Universities, Inc., (AUI) for DOE. The purpose of the assessment was to provide the status of environment, safety, and health (ES H) programs at the Laboratory. The scope of the assessment included a review of management systems and o… more

Global climate feedbacks: Conclusions and recommendations of the June 1990 BNL workshop

Description: The issue of global change initiated by increases in the concentrations of CO{sub 2} and other greenhouse gases is a scientific issue with major policy implications. The best means to examine the response of the Earth's climate to prospective perturbations in radiative forcing caused by such changes, and to other industrial activities, is modeling, specifically by means of general circulation models (GCMs) of the Earth's atmosphere and of the coupled atmosphere-ocean system. The purpose of this… more

Fission track analysis of plutonium in small specimens of biological material: Ultrasensitive analysis for sup 239 Pu in 50 urine samples from the Marshall Islands furnished by Brookhaven National Laboratory

Description: A neutron induced fission track method was successfully developed for assaying {sup 239}Pu in human urine. The technique involves means to remove potentially interfering natural uranium from the sample and reagents. The method was applied to 50 urine samples including an unknown number of spikes and controls from the Marshall Islands. 49 samples were successfully analyzed. The mean activity for the 47 samples which were not positive for {sup 239}Pu did not differ significantly from the mean for… more

Stabilization of compactible waste

Description: This report summarizes the results of series of experiments performed to determine the feasibility of stabilizing compacted or compactible waste with polymers. The need for this work arose from problems encountered at disposal sites attributed to the instability of this waste in disposal. These studies are part of an experimental program conducted at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) investigating methods for the improved solidification/stabilization of DOE low-level wastes. The approach tak… more

Encapsulation of mixed radioactive and hazardous waste contaminated incinerator ash in modified sulfur cement

Description: Some of the process waste streams incinerated at various Department of Energy (DOE) facilities contain traces of both low-level radioactive (LLW) and hazardous constituents, thus yielding ash residues that are classified as mixed waste. Work is currently being performed at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) to develop new and innovative materials for encapsulation of DOE mixed wastes including incinerator ash. One such material under investigation is modified sulfur cement, a thermoplastic de… more
