Janus Upgrade using brewster angle disk amplifier technology. [Janus laser system]

Description: The Nuclear Test and Experimental Science Program (NTES) has requested that the Laser Program design and price an upgrade to the Janus laser system (JANUS UPGRADE) capable of reliably delivering in excess of 200 joules per beamline in a range of pulse forms to three experiment areas. The facility is to have the following characteristics: three experiment areas, two high energy beams, each with 200--400 joule/1 ns at a wavelength of 1.053 or 1.064 microns, and 125--250 J/1 ns when frequency doub… more

Graded Al sub x Ga sub 1-x as photoconductive devices for high efficiency picosecond optoelectronic switching

Description: Picosecond photoconductivity has been achieved for a variety of semiconductor materials by techniques which have now become almost standard. Enhanced scattering by the excessive amount of deep level defects which provide for picosecond recombination lifetimes significantly reduce the mobility, degrading the responsivity of the photoconductor. This paper will present a concept where improved responsivity is achievable by utilizing a graded bandgap Al{sub x}Ga{sub 1-x}As active detecting layer gr… more

Plasma diagnostics for the DIII-D divertor upgrade

Description: The DIII-D tokamak is being upgraded to allow for divertor biasing, baffling, and pumping experiments. This paper gives an overview of the new diagnostics added to DIII-D as part of this Advanced Divertor Program. They include tile current monitors, fast reciprocating Langmuir probes, a fixed probe array in the divertor, fast neutral pressure gauges, and H{sub {alpha}} measurements with TV cameras and fiber optics coupled to a high resolution spectrometer. 9 refs.

The LLNL (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory) ICF (Inertial Confinement Fusion) Program: Progress toward ignition in the Laboratory

Description: The Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) Program at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has made substantial progress in target physics, target diagnostics, and laser science and technology. In each area, progress required the development of experimental techniques and computational modeling. The objectives of the target physics experiments in the Nova laser facility are to address and understand critical physics issues that determine the conditions required to achieve ignition and g… more

The Delta-T Tuneup Procedure for the Fermilab Linac

Description: The delta-t procedure provides a means of monitoring and setting to design values the phase and amplitude of fields within a linear accelerator. Deviations from design values of energy entering an accelerator module can also be determined. The procedure will be used to tune the upgraded linac under construction at Fermilab. Results of preliminary tests of the technique on the existing 200 MeV linac show qualitative trends in agreement with analysis. Quantitative comparisons show some difference… more

OH Module Assembly Stand

Description: There is an OR module assembly stand in use at IB4. This design has been approved by safety, as presented by Mike Foley, and has been successfully used. Another one is needed at the D-zero assembly building, but some modifications need to be made. This report will show that the new modified design is at least as strong, if not stronger, than the older IB4 design in every aspect. Since the weight distribution of the OR modules on the sling is indeterminate, this report compares three cases of su… more

Mechanical construction of the 805 MHz side-coupled cavities for the Fermilab Linac Upgrade

Description: The manufacturing processes for the Side Coupled Structures (SCS) are intimately connected with their tuning requirements. Present Computer Numerical Controlled machining allows very repeatable accuracies of dimensions. This has led to a manufacturing sequence which reduces the need for repeated machining step. Surface tolerances in the high field region of the accelerating cells were assured. Tuning steps were reduced at all stages of construction. This paper will describe the mechanical steps… more

The Stanford Linear Collider

Description: The Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) has been in operation for several years with the initial and accelerator physics experiments just completed. A synopsis of these results is included. The second round of experiments is now under preparation to install the new physics detector (SLD) in Fall 1990 and to increase the luminosity significantly by late 1991. Collisions at high intensity and with polarized electrons are planned. Many beam dynamics and technological advances are in progress to meet th… more

Tuning methods for the 805 MHz side-coupled cavities in the Fermilab linac upgrade

Description: The fabrication and tuning of Side-Coupled Accelerator Structures (SCS) are strongly interrelated. Consideration of mechanical tolerances and fabrication sequences can reduce tuning steps that require repeated machining. With available CNC machines and numerical calculation programs, it is possible to machine cavities to a calculated shape. Accelerating cells are tuned by control of the depth of coupling slots rather than trimming the nose of accelerating cells. Predicting the correct frequency… more
