Summary of the electron accelerators session

Description: Since the last High Energy Physics Symposium, there has been considerable progress in the field of polarized electron accelerators. Projects well into construction include the SLC, HERA, and LEP. The status of polarized beams for these projects is discussed in this session. Semiclassical and quantum mechanical calculations of polarizing and depolarizing effects are discussed, for both linear colliders and for storage rings. Substantial progress is continuing in the understanding of depolarizing… more

NK Muon Beam

Description: The NK Muon Beam will be a modified version of the existing NT beam line. The decision to employ a modified version of the NT beam line was made based on considerations of cost and availability of the beam line. Preliminary studies considered use of other beam lines, e.g., the NW beam line, and even of moving the bubble chamber with its superconducting coils but were rejected for reasons such as cost, personnel limitations, and potential conflicts with other users.

The Brookhaven Accelerator Test Facility

Description: The Brookhaven Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) will consist of a 50--100 MeV/c electron linac and a 100 GW CO/sub 2/ laser system. A high brightness RF-gun operating at 2856 MHz is to be used as the injector into the linac. The RF-gun contains a Nd:Yag-laser-driven photocathode capable of producing a stream of six ps electron pulses separated by 12.5 ns. The maximum charge in a micropulse will be one nano-Coulomb. The CO/sub 2/ laser pulse length will be a few picoseconds and will be synchroniz… more

Spin facilities in North America

Description: Spin physics is an important ingredient in the research programs of the major electron and proton accelerators in Canada and the United States. We review here briefly the present and future facilities at TRIUMF, LANL, BNL, FNAL, SSC, Bates, CEBAF, and SLAC.

Linear induction acclerators for industrial applications

Description: In this paper, we will briefly discuss the principles of the induction accelerator and will describe our development program. The goals of our program are to improve system reliability and to reduce system cost. An accelerator presently under construction which embodies a number of industrial improvements will be described. Unique features are a low cost accelerator design, and an SCR switched, tubeless pulsed power system. 3 refs., 4 figs.
