Generation of coherent soft x-rays using a single-pass free-electron laser amplifier

Description: We consider a single-pass free-electron laser (FEL) amplifier, driven by an rf-linac followed by a damping ring for reduced emittance, for use in generating coherent light in the soft x-ray region. The dependence of the optical gain on electron-beam quality, studied with the three-dimensional FEL simulation code FELEX, is given and related to the expected power of self-amplified spontaneous emission. Extension of free-electron lasers into the extreme ultraviolet

Description: Encouraged by experimental operation of free-electron lasers in the visible to far-infrared, several research centers are now designing and/or building devices to extend into the vacuum-ultraviolet and soft x-ray regions below 100 nm, collectively referred to as the extreme ultraviolet. Relay studies: Existing data, current testing and cabinet amplification

Description: The seismic fragility of most electrical equipment is governed by the malfunction of relays. This paper discusses the combined study being performed at BNL by evaluating existing fragility test data, conducting a new relay test program and estimating the cabinet amplification at relay locations. Amplified spontaneous emission and pulse train amplification in a KrF amplifier

Description: We present modeling status of pulse-train amplification experiments conducted at Sandia National Laboratory in Albuquerque (SNLA) with an e-beam pumped KrF laser amplifier. The laser geometry is such that the dominant amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) growth is along the propagation axis. A megajoule class krypton fluoride amplifier for single shot, high gain ICF application

Description: A design study is underway to define the optimal architecture for a KrF laser system which will deliver 10 MJ of 248-nm light to an ICF target. We present one approach which incorporates final power amplifiers in the megajoule class, achieving 10 MJ with four final amplifiers. Soft x-ray amplification in lithium-like Al XI (154 /angstrom/) and Si XII (129 /angstrom/)

Description: Recent experiments on soft x-ray amplification in lithium-like ions in a CO/sub 2/ laser-produced recombining plasma confined in a magnetic field are presented. The maximum gain-length products observed are GL approx. = 3 to 4 for the 154 /angstrom/, 4f-3d transition in Al XI and GL (approxreverse arrowequal/ 1 to 2 for the 129 /angstrom/, 4f-3d transition in Si XII, respectively.
