Artificial photosynthesis using chlorophyll based carotenoid quinone triads: A brief synopsis of research progress as of 31 December 1986

Description: The design, synthesis and study of a series of carotenoid-chlorophyll-quinone triad molecules which mimic some of the basic photochemistry and photophysics of natural photosynthesis is sought. The first members of this series have now been prepared, and have been found to mimic photosynthetic charge separation, carotenoid antenna function, and carotenoid photoprotection from singlet oxygen damage. Although the triad molecules mimic the general principle of multistep electron transfer which is f… more

Chemical Biodynamics Division: Annual report, October 1, 1986-September 30, 1987

Description: Investigators are studying the various components that make up the photosynthetic reaction center complexes in many different organisms. This work not only involves understanding the kinetics of energy transfer and storage in plants, but also includes studies to work out how photosynthetic cells regulate the expression of genes encoding the photosynthetic apparatus. The second biological theme is a series of investigations into the relationship between structure and function in nucleic acids. O… more

Energy transfer processes in solar energy conversion

Description: This program involves the experimental and theoretical study of optically induced electron transfer and electronic excitation transport in systems with complex structures. The focus is to obtain an understanding of the intimate interplay among intermolecular interactions, structure, and dynamics. A combination of picosecond transient grating experiments, time resolved fluorescence depolarization experiments, conventional optical spectroscopy, and statistical mechanical theory is being employed … more

The distance and temperature dependence of electron-transfer rates

Description: Electron transfer occurs over relatively long distances in a variety of systems. In interpreting the measured electron-transfer rates it is usually assumed that the rate constants depend exponentially on the distance separating the two redox sites and that this distance dependence arises from the decrease in the electronic coupling of the redox sites with increasing separation. Although the electronic coupling is an important factor determining the distance dependence of the rate, theoretical c… more

Molecular beam studies of reaction dynamics

Description: Purpose of this research project is two-fold: (1) to elucidate detailed dynamics of simple elementary reactions which are theoretically important and to unravel the mechanism of complex chemical reactions or photo chemical processes which play an important role in many macroscopic processes and (2) to determine the energetics of polyatomic free radicals using microscopic experimental methods. Most of the information is derived from measurement of the product fragment translational energy and an… more

Low-power photolytically pumped lasers: Final technical report

Description: We have carried out an extensive series of measurements of the time-resolved Xe/sub 2/* emission spectra following optical pumping by a short-pulse F/sub 2/ laser at 157.6 nm. Most measurements were performed using a gated Optical Multichannel Analyzer detector; we also made measurements using a scanning monochromator fitted with a photomultiplier and using a boxcar integrator for time resolution. The two sets of results agree well and show that both the singlet and triplet emission bands are b… more
