WESF cesium capsule behavior at high temperature or during thermal cycling

Description: Double-walled stainless steel (SS) capsules prepared for storage of radioactive /sup 137/Cs from defense waste are now being considered for use as sources for commercial irradiation. Cesium was recovered at B-plant from the high-level radioactive waste generated during processing of defense nuclear fuel. It was then purified, converted to the chloride form, and encapsulated at the Hanford Waste Encapsulation and Storage Facility (WESF). The molten cesium chloride salt was encapsulated by pourin… more

Creep of 304 LN and 316 L stainless steels at cryogenic temperatures

Description: Creep behavior of Type 304 LN plate and 316 L shielded-metal-arc (SMA)-deposited stainless weld metal was investigated at 4/sup 0/K. Testing was performed at constant load in a creep machine with a cryostat designed for long-term stability. Both transient and steady-state creep were observed during tests lasting over 2000 hours. Steady-state creep rates were much greater than expected from extrapolations of 300-K creep data. Creep rates on the order of 10/sup -10/ s/sup -1/ were observed at str… more

Cesium Chloride Compatibility Testing Program. Annual report, fiscal year 1984

Description: During the course of a prior examination, it was found that one of the aged test capsules exhibited discoloration and pitting on the outer surface of the inner capsule. The damage was attributed to problems encountered in the electropolishing operation, which is used to decontaminate the inner capsule after it is loaded with the CsCl and welded shut. A study was carried out in FY 1984 to: determine if the pitting was associated with the electropolishing operation; identify acceptable solution(s… more

Review of waste package verification tests. Semiannual report, October 1984-March 1985

Description: The potential of WAPPA, a second-generation waste package system code, to meet the needs of the regulatory community is analyzed. The analysis includes an indepth review of WAPPA`s individual process models and a review of WAPPA`s operation. It is concluded that the code is of limited use to the NRC in the present form. Recommendations for future improvement, usage, and implementation of the code are given. This report also describes the results of a testing program undertaken to determine the … more

Corrosion processes of austenitic stainless steels and copper-based materials in gamma-irradiated aqueous environments

Description: The US Department of Energy is evaluating a site located at Yucca Mountain in Nye County, Nevada, as a potential high-level nuclear waste repository. The rock at the proposed repository horizon (above the water table) is densely welded, devitrified tuff, and the fluid environment in the repository is expected to be primarily air-steam. A more severe environment would be present in the unlikely case of intrusion of vadose groundwater into the repository site. For this repository location, austen… more
