Energy response and dose-rate calibration of a Geiger-Mueller gamma-ray detector

Description: To obtain more precise dose-rate measurements, we have taken a commercial gamma-ray dosimeter that uses a Geiger-Mueller (GM) tube as its detector and, by supplying it with an externally regulated high voltage, counted the gamma-ray-induced pulses with suitable scaling and timing circuits. We have now improved the method of calibration by measuring detector response to 13 different sources, each with an independently verified strength, in the energy range from 60 keV to 2.6 MeV. With the use of… more

Gamma-ray dosimetry measurements of the Little Boy replica

Description: We present the current status of our gamma-ray dosimetry results for the Little Boy replica. Both Geiger-Mueller and thermoluminescent detectors were used in the measurements. Future work is needed to test assumptions made in data analysis.

Multipurpose radiac for field surveys and training

Description: The Instrument Technologies Group at Los Alamos has developed a multipurpose radiac. It uses a variety of detectors coupled with a CMOS microprocessor to provide ease of use and an unambiguous display. It allows concurrent surveys for alpha, beta, gamma, and neutron radiation. In addition, it has an external data link for coupling to and from data acquisition/storage equipment, hence making it a perfect training tool. The instrument is small (4x8x2.4 in.) and lightweight (<2 lbs). It runs for 5… more

Beta Particle Measurement and Dosimetry Requirements at NRC-Licensed Facilities

Description: Researchers from Pacific Northwest Laboratroy (PNL) have conducted beta radiation measurements under laboratory and field conditions to assess the degree of the measurement problem and offer suggestions for possible remedies. The primary measurement systems selected for use in this study were the silicon (Si) surface barrier spectrometer system and the multielement beta dosimeter. Three boiling water reactors (BWRs), two pressurized water reactors (PWRs), and one fuel fabrication facility were … more
