Efficiency-improvement study for GaAs solar cells. Final report, March 31, 1980-September 30, 1981

Description: High-yield fabrication of good quality AlGaAs/GaAs concentration solar cells has been a limiting factor in widespread utilization of these high conversion efficiency (22 to 24%) photovoltaic cells. Reported is a series of investigations to correlate solar cell yield with substrate quality, growth techniques, layer composition, and metallization processes. In addition, several diagnostic techniques are described to aid in device characterization.

Laser-optical studies of the spontaneous-fission isomer /sup 240m/Am

Description: Improved optical pumping experiments on the /sup 240m/Am fission isomer have been performed using the Laser Induced Nuclear Polarization (LINUP) technique. Results of these experiments are discussed in terms of the constraints they place on the spectroscopic properties of /sup 240m/Am. In addition, a quantitative analysis of the isomer shift in terms of nuclear shape is undertaken making use of recent muonic x-ray data on /sup 241/Am and /sup 243/Am.

Hydrogen effects in high-purity stainless steels

Description: Internal and environmental hydrogen damage to three pure stainless steels (19% Cr and 10, 14 or 19% Ni) were evaluated by tensile tests. Concentrations of C, Mn, Si and P were less than in commercial alloys. Susceptibility of the pure alloys to hydrogen damage was comparable to that of commercial austenitic stainless steels. 3 figures, 4 tables.

Simulated heat-exchanger tubes: DOE Geothermal Test Facility, East Mesa, California. Corrosion test report. [Allegheny-Ludlum Alloy 29-4 and Alloy 29-4C]

Description: A 1032-hr corrosion test was made of two geothermal heat exchanger materials, Allegheny-Ludlum Alloy 29-4 and Alloy 29-4C. Coupons of the two metals were exposed under conditions simulating flow in a geothermal heat exchanger tube. Continuous flow and cyclic exposure tests were made. No signs of localized corrosion were observed in either the base metal, tube weld seam, or heat affected zone. Most coupons showed statistically insignificant weight change. A corrosion rate of less than 0.5 mil/yr… more
