Growth of KH/sub 2/PO/sub 4/ crystals at constant temperature and supersaturation. Final report, October 20, 1980-October 20, 1981

Description: A large three-zone crystallizer system was constructed and successfully operated for growing KH/sub 2/PO/sub 4/ single crystals. Under conditions of constant crystallization temperature and supersaturation, growth rates exceding 5 mm per day were demonstrated for KH/sub 2/PO/sub 4/ crystals of 5 x 5 cm cross section. The optical quality of these crystals was equivalent to that of crystals grown at rates presently considered as state-of-the-art (approx. 1 mm/day). Sample crystals were supplied f… more

Hydrogeochemical and stream-sediment reconnaissance, orientation study, Ouachita Mountain area, Arkansas. National Uranium Resource Evaluation Program

Description: A hydrogeochemical ground water orientation study was conducted in the multi-mineralized area of the Ouachita Mountains, Arkansas in order to evaluate the usefulness of ground water as a sampling medium for uranium exploration in similar areas. Ninety-three springs and nine wells were sampled in Clark, Garland, Hot Springs, Howard, Montgomery, Pike, Polk, and Sevier Counties. Manganese, barite, celestite, cinnabar, stibnite, copper, lead, and zinc are present. The following parameters were dete… more

Structure and conductivity of the NASICON analog Na/sub 3/SC/sub 2/(PO/sub 4/)/sub 3/

Description: Neutron and x-ray diffraction data of Na/sub 3/SC/sub 2/(PO/sub 4/)/sub 3/ are presented that show the transition from an ordinary-conducting, high temperature phase to a still higher temperature, superionic conducting phase. There are at least four polymorphic modifications. At room temperature, the refined neutron diffraction data confirm the Cc space group reported by Efremov and Kalinin but with a = 16.0449(24), b = 8.9225(15), c = 9.0656(13)A, ..beta.. = 126.918(21), R/sub weighted pattern… more

New prodrugs based on phospholipid-nucleoside conjugates

Description: A method is described for the preparation of defined, isomerically pure phospholipid-nucleoside conjugates as a prodrug in which the drug (araC) is attached to the phospholipid by a monophosphate linkage. Key intermediates in the process involve selective blocking and deblocking of the nucleoside derivative. These particular monophosphate-linked derivatives represent a new class of prodrug, which are useful by themselves or in combination with diphosphate linked derivatives. Several new composi… more

Progress in uv damage testing at Los Alamos. [Laser damage test facility]

Description: A laser damage test facility is described which employs in-line beam diagnostics and a real-time video monitoring system. Testing at three excimer laser wavelengths is accomplished at 35 pps with a nominal 10-ns pulsewidth. The test spotsize (1/e/sup 2/ diameter) is typically 0.6 mm. Samples have consisted primarily of multilayer dielectric reflectors composed of a variety of materials. In particular, the best results - is congruent to 3 J/cm/sup 2/ at 248 nm, is congruent to 5 J/cm/sup 2/ at 3… more

Electrical-Conductivity Measurements of Leachates for the Rapid Assessment of Wasteform Corrosion Resistance

Description: Measurements of the electrical conductivity of leachate solutions as a function of time can be used as an efficient, informative means of evaluation and comparison in the development of nuclear waste forms and in the preliminary analysis of their corrosion resistance in distilled water. Three separate applications of this technique are described in this work. These are: (1) its use in the optimization of the corrosion resistance of a crystalline wasteform (monazite); (2) a study of the protecti… more

Solid State Division progress report, September 30, 1981

Description: Progress made during the 19 months from March 1, 1980, through September 30, 1981, is reported in the following areas: theoretical solid state physics (surfaces, electronic and magnetic properties, particle-solid interactions, and laser annealing); surface and near-surface properties of solids (plasma materials interactions, ion-solid interactions, pulsed laser annealing, and semiconductor physics and photovoltaic conversion); defects in solids (radiation effects, fracture, and defects and impu… more

Microbial colonization of retorted shale in field and laboratory studies

Description: The microbial colonization of retorted shale was measured in field lysimeters and laboratory with retorted shale obtained from an above-ground retort operating in the direct heating mode. In field lysimeter studies, total aerobic heterotrophic bacterial colony forming units (cfu), as measured by a selective plating medium in surface horizons of retorted shale and adjacent soils, were similar (3.3 x 10/sup 6/ and 2.7 x 10/sup 6/ bacterial cfu/g dry weight) two months after disposal. However, unl… more
