Method for fabricating a seal between a ceramic and a metal alloy

Description: A method of fabricating a seal between a ceramic and an alloy comprising the steps of prefiring the alloy in an atmosphere with a very low partial pressure of oxygen, firing the assembled alloy and ceramic in air, and gradually cooling the fired assembly to avoid the formation of thermal stress in the ceramic. The method forms a bond between the alloy and the ceramic capable of withstanding the environment of a pressurized water reactor and suitable for use in an electrical conductivity sensiti… more

Quartz-resonator pressure gauges: temperature performance

Description: The force-frequency effect in quartz resonators has in the past been utilized as a transducer mechanism in various realizations and, in particular, successfully commercialized as a pressure transducer. More recently the need for a very precise (0.01 psi pressure uncertainty at 10,000 psi) pressure transducer to operate at high temperatures (275 to 300/sup 0/C) in geothermal environments has necessitated further development efforts directed to improve performance. The incorporation of the rotate… more

Measurement system support at the JAERI-CRT Facility: pressure transducers. [Containment Research Testing]

Description: As part of a continuing liaison between the US NRC and foreigh full scale containment research programs, measurements assistance in the form of the loan of 30 flush diaphram pressure transducers has been provided to the JAERI-CRT MK II research program at Tokai-Mura, Japan. Procedures developed earlier at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) under similar research work sponsored by the US NRC were used by LLNL to successfully complete final installation and in-situ end-to-end calib… more

Elevated-temperature (600/sup 0/F), manual contact ultrasonic examination

Description: Manual contact ultrasonic examination at temperatures above 250/sup 0/F has not been successful in providing meaningful results. Sensitivity of standard transducers degrades rapidly at 250/sup 0/F and above. It has been demonstrated that by using standard transducers and commercially available wedges and couplants in combination with a couplant/cooler system, manual contact ultrasonic examination can be performed at 600/sup 0/F for an essentially 100% duty cycle in conformance to the sensitivit… more

Recently developed well test insrumentation for low-to-moderate temperature hydrothermal reservoirs

Description: The engineering drawings, assembly instructions, and recommended usage for several of the instruments developed for low and moderate temperature (< 150/sup 0/C) hydrothermal well testing are presented. Included are the drawings for: a downhole pressure and temperature instrument, a multi-conductor cablehead, a line driver to be used with the downhole pressure and temperature instrument, and a fluid-level detector.

Sourcebook on high-temperature electronics and instrumentation

Description: This sourcebook summarizes the high-temperature characteristics of a number of commercially available electronic components and materials required in geothermal well-logging instruments that must operate to 275/sup 0/C. The sourcebook is written to provide a starting place for instrument designers, who need to know the high-temperature electronic products that are available and the design and performance limitations of these products. The electronic component information given includes the stan… more

National Seismic Stations transducers and filters

Description: The National Seismic Stations (NSS) instruments are being developed for seismic monitoring of regional and teleseismic events. They consist of two 3-component, broadband, borehole seismometers: the KS-36000 and the S-700, which is the backup for the KS-36000. Output is divided into frequency bands to reduce data loss due to saturation. Complete block diagrams of the KS-36000 and S-700 NSS seismometers and filters are presented. Both open-loop and closed-loop steady-state amplitude and phase cur… more

Instrumentation Report No. 2: identification, evaluation, and remedial actions related to transducer failures at the spent fuel test-climax

Description: The Spent Fuel Test-Climax (SFT-C) is a test of the feasibility of safe and reliable short-term storage and retrieval of spent fuel from commercial nuclear reactors. In support of operational and technical goals of the test, about 850 channels of instrumentation have been installed at the SFT-C. Failure of several near-field instruments began less than six months after emplacement of 11 canisters of spent fuel and activation of six thermally similar simulators. The failed units were linear pote… more
