A METHOD FOR PRODUCING A HIGH QUALITY SOLENOIDAL FIELD

Description: A relatively simple and inexpensive device is described which can be used to provide a highly homogeneous solenoidal magnetic field when the solenoid windings are inadequate. Design considerations and experimental measurements are presented. A field straightness of approximately 10{sup -4} radians has been achieved.

TMX-axisymmetric magnet-set-design study

Description: Studies are currently being made to design an axisymmetric modification to the TMX-Upgrade experiment. The existing TMX-Upgrade quadrupole plug and transition magnet sets are replaced by the circular coils of an axisymmetric plug. The existing TMX-Upgrade magnet set is shown. The circular coils are sectioned to show the quadrupole magnets and the flux bundle. The two end cells of this magnet set are MHD stable minimum-B plugs. From a mechanical design viewpoint, an axisymmetric design is attrac… more

New developments in program STANSOL version 3

Description: STANSOL is a computer program that applied a solution for the mechanical displacement, stress, and strain in rotationally-transversely isotropic, homogeneous, axisymmetric solenoids. Careful application of the solution permits the complex mechanical behavior of multilayered, nonhomogeneous solenoids to be examined in which the loads may vary arbitrarily from layer to layer. Loads applied to the solenoid model by program STANSOL may consist of differential temperature, winding preload, internal … more

Performance of an internally cooled superconducting solenoid

Description: A superconducting magnet constructed of an internally cooled solenoid has been produced and tested. Particular emphasis was placed on measurement of the stability margins of the magnet. Test results showed that this magnet has demonstrated the following merits: (1) it reached short sample critical current limit with no training; (2) no degradation due to strand motion in fields was apparent; (3) it can be charged and discharged to high current densities and high fields at a fast rate; (4) it ha… more

Engineering Sheets of 12 Metre Solenoid

Description: The solenoid design follows closely the considerations qiven in {bar p} note 116. In particular we try to make the solenoid undivided, but with a centre tap for the cooling water. We found a variant for the centre tap, so that the two layers are now electrically in series. Due to the very long length, it seems better not to fill the clearance between return yoke and OD of the second layer with epoxy. Instead, we support and adjust the coil every 2 m with three bolts at 120 deqrees screwed in th… more
