Magnetic field, closed orbit, and energy measurement in the Bevatron

Description: This report provides the information necessary for a better evaluation of particle energy in the Bevatron. Previously, the nominal magnetic field value and radius were used to calculate the value for the kinetic energy of the particle. This value was good to a few percent. Today, more and more experimenters would like to know the energy to a more precise value. To this end, corrections to the measured magnetic field values and the radial closed orbit are provided.

Combination free-electron and gaseous laser

Description: A multiple laser having one or more gaseous laser stages and one or more free electron stages is described. Each of the free electron laser stages is sequentially pumped by a microwave linear accelerator. Nitrogen fixation method and apparatus. [DOE patent application]

Description: A method and apparatus for achieving nitrogen fixation includes a volumetric electric discharge chamber. The volumetric discharge chamber provides an even distribution of an electron beam, and enables the chamber to be maintained at a controlled energy to pressure (E/p) ratio. Microwave measurements of energy lost to longitudinal modes by single electron bunches traversing periodic structures

Polarization of a stored electron beam

Description: Synchrotron radiation by a point charge is a familiar subject in classical electrodynamics. Perhaps less familiar are some quantum mechanical corrections to the classical results. Some of those quantum aspects of synchrotron radiation are described. One of the quantum effects leads to the expectation that electrons in a storage ring will polarize themselves to 92% - a surprisingly high value. Polarization research and facilities at LAMPF

Description: In summary, facilities exist for spin correlation and spin transfer measurements from 300 to 800 MeV with all (N,S,L) spin directions, and an energetic program is being pursued in several beam lines simultaneously. Elastic pp measurements at a few energies are making good progress but polarized neutron experiments are lagging. The problem of understanding the inelastic reactions has scarcely begun.

Review of 1064-nm damage tests of electron-beam deposited Ta/sub 2/O/sub 5//SiO/sub 2/ antireflection coatings

Description: Damage tests of Ta/sub 2/O/sub 5//SiO/sub 2/ antireflection films deposited under a variety of conditions showed that thresholds of films deposited at 175/sup 0/C were greater than thresholds of films deposited at either 250/sup 0/C or 325/sup 0/C. Deposition at high rate and low oxygen pressure produced highly absorptive films with low thresholds. Linear collider: a preview

Description: Since no linear colliders have been built yet it is difficult to know at what energy the linear cost scaling of linear colliders drops below the quadratic scaling of storage rings. Heating of a dense plasma with an intense relativistic electron beam: initial observations

Description: A dense (approx. 10/sup 17/ cm/sup -3/) plasma has been heated via the relativistic two-stream instability using a 3 MeV, intense (5 x 10/sup 5/ A/cm/sup 2/) electron beam. Beam tests on the 4-kA, 1. 5-MeV injector for FXR

Description: The new flash x-ray machine (FXR) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is scheduled for completion in late 1981. This is a 54 module, linear induction accelertor, designed to deliver 500 Roentgen at 1 m as bremsstrahlung from a 20 MeV, 4 kA, 60 ns pulsed electron beam. Description: We report the design of a spectral modification system (SMS) for use with the proposed NEAL linac-pulse stretcher ring, cw electron beam facility. Vacuum system for Advanced Test Accelerator

Description: The Advanced Test Accelerator (ATA) is a pulsed linear electron beam accelerator designed to study charged particle beam propagation. ATA is designed to produce a 10,000 amp 50 MeV, 70 ns electron beam. The electron beam acceleration is accomplished in ferrite loaded cells. Description and performance characteristics for the neutron Coincidence Collar for the verification of reactor fuel assemblies

Description: An active neutron interrogation method has been developed for the measurement of /sup 235/U content in fresh fuel assemblies. The neutron Coincidence Collar uses neutron interrogation with an AmLi neutron source and coincidence counting the induced fission reaction neutrons from the /sup 235/U. This manual describes the system components, operation, and performance characteristics. Applications of the Coincidence Collar to PWR and BWR types of reactor fuel assemblies are described.

Electrode shapes for spherical Pierce flow

Description: The problem of obtaining the electrode shapes to produce a conically converging proton beam that has constant current density over each spherical surface of convergence is treated in spherical coordinates. A cone is taken from the Langmuir and Blodgett solution for the region within, and at the edge of, the conically converging beam. A solution for the LaPlace equation, required for the region outside the beam, is in terms of a power series in r and the Legendre polynomials of cos phi.

High-energy-neutron damage in Nb/sub 3/Sn: changes in critical properties, and damage-energy analysis

Description: Filamentary wires of Nb/sub 3/Sn have been irradiated with fission-reactor, 14.8-MeV, and d-Be neutrons and the changes in critical properties measured. The changes observed scale reasonably well with the calculated damage energies for the irradiations. A critical dose for operation of these conductors in fusion-magnet applications is determined to be 0.19 eV/atom damage energy or 0.0019 dpa.
