Flow-induced vibration for light water reactors. Final progress report, July 1981-September 1981

Description: Flow-Induced Vibration for Light Water Reactors (FIV for LWRs) is a program designed to improve the FIV performance of light water reactors through the development of design criteria, analytical models for predicting behavior of components, and general scaling laws to improve the accuracy of reduced-scale tests, and through the identification of high FIV risk areas. The program is managed by the General Electric Nuclear Power Systems Engineering Department and has three major contributors: Gene… more

Build-up of tritium in a liquid-lithium breeding blanket for an inertial-confinement-fusion chamber

Description: The build-up of tritium in a liquid lithium breeding blanket for an ICF chamber has been examined. The break-even time is found to decrease both the increasing tritium breeding ratio and increasing values of ..cap alpha.., the fraction of unburned tritium absorbed in lithium. The break-even inventory also decreased with increasing breeding ratio but increases with increasing values ..cap alpha... For a molten-salt extraction process, the steady-state tritium inventory in lithium is inversely pr… more

Propagation of a liquid-liquid explosion

Description: Direct contact between two liquids, one cold and the other hot, may be precluded by the presence of a vapor film. Bridging of this film by one or both fluids results in rapid local boiling, which may initiate a propagating liquid-liquid explosion. A mechanism is discussed for the propagation that involves implosion of the film, rapid mixing of the fluids, heat exchange to warm the cold fluid above the temperature for spontaneous nucleation, and the explosive generation of vapor, which in turn c… more

Method for chug classification. [BWR]

Description: A method is presented which classifies the late time condensation phenomena of chugging as it occurs in pressure suppression tests. The method uses a five (5) character letter code which describes both the spectral (frequency) and temporal characteristics of a chug event.

Mechanistic analysis of loft pulsed neutron activation data

Description: Pulsed Neutron Activation (PNA) is a technique for measuring mass-weighted flow velocities without perturbing the flow. Monte Carlo PNA tagging and Monte Carlo detection calculations of the irradiated fluid with the transport of the irradiated fluid are used to predict the time spectrum in a PNA measurement. This mechanistic method has been used to analyze recent LOFT PNA measurements of single-phase water flowing in a 14-in. (0.35 m) schedule 160 steel pipe.

Summary of the hydraulic evaluation of LWBR

Description: The principal hydraulic performance features of the Light Water Breeder Reactor are summarized in this report. The calculational models and procedures used for prediction of reactor flow and pressure distributions under steady-state and transient operating conditions are described. Likewise, the analysis models for evaluation of the static and dynamic performance characteristics of the hydraulically-balanced and hydraulically-buffered movable-fuel reactivity-control system are outlined. An exte… more

CORTRAN code user manual. [LMFBR]

Description: CORTRAN has been developed as a relatively fast running design code for core-wide steady-state and transient analysis of Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor (LMFBR) cores. The preliminary version of this computer program uses subchannel analysis techniques to compute the velocity and temperature fields on a multiassembly basis for three types of transient forcing functions: total power, total flow, and inlet coolant temperature. Interassembly heat transfer, intra-assembly heat transfer, and intra… more

Graphic display of spatially distributed binary-state experimental data. [PWR; BWR]

Description: Experimental data collected from a large number of transducers spatially distributed throughout a three-dimensional volume has typically posed a difficult interpretation task for the analyst. This paper describes one approach to alleviating this problem by presenting color graphic displays of experimental data; specifically, data representing the dynamic three-dimensional distribution of cooling fluid collected during the reflood and refill of simulated nuclear reactor vessels. Color-coded bina… more

Analytical and experimental simulation of boiling oscillations in sodium with a low-pressure water system. [LMFBR]

Description: An experimental and analytical program designed to simulate sodium boiling under low-power, low-flow conditions has been completed. Experiments were performed using atmospheric- pressure water as a simulant fluid and a simple one-dimensional model was developed for the system. Results indicate that water is a suitable simulant for liquid sodium under certain conditions and that the model does a fair job of modeling the system. In addition, oscillations that occur during the boiling process appe… more

Development and Application of a Computer Model for Simulating a Geothermal System in New Mexico. (Final Report, 2/1/78 - 1/30/80)

Description: The development and testing of a computer based mathematical model simulating simultaneous transport of heat (or a dissolved solute) and water in a saturated single-phase groundwater flow system are described. The formulation of the underlying flow and transport equations is presented and the discretization of these equations is developed using the standard Galerkin finite element method, and the upstream weighted residual finite element technique. A computer code is developed to solve the disc… more
